Image credit: Project Frog<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"clear-photo\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> received a total of $425 million in sponsored funds to close fiscal year 2015 (<abbr>FY2015<\/abbr>). The total reflects an increase of 8.5 percent over the previous year&#8217;s tally of $392 million and marks the first increase in extramural award funding after three straight years of decline.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;With the effects of sequestration, budget cuts and the realignment of R&#38;D funding priorities, the last few years have been extremely challenging not only for the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> but for every research institution across the nation,&rdquo; said <strong>Vassilis L. Syrmos<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> vice president for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/research\/\">research and innovation<\/a>. &ldquo;However, thanks to the dedicated efforts of our faculty, support staff and students, we not only stopped the slide&#8212;but managed an increase of almost 9 percent in funding.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The alignment of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s research enterprise with both the nation&#8217;s and the state&#8217;s critical challenges is manifested by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hnei.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Natural Energy Institute<\/a>, which received $8.5 million from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onr.navy.mil\/\">Office of Naval Research<\/a> for its Asia-Pacific Research Initiative for Sustainable Energy Systems (<abbr>APRISES<\/abbr>) to continue testing and evaluation of renewable generation and power systems controls for smart and micro-grids. <abbr>APRISES<\/abbr> has contributed substantial support for smart- and micro-grid research activities to ongoing efforts on Maui, <span aria-label=\"Molokai\u201d>Moloka&#699;i<\/span>, Coconut Island and at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa campus&#8212;recently breaking ground for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/07\/09\/first-net-zero-energy-buildings-under-construction-at-uh-manoa\/\">installation of two net zero energy classrooms<\/a> to be completed in spring 2016.<\/p>\n<p>At <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/\">National Science Foundation<\/a> research project that directly impacts the quality of healthcare of local residents is the Pharm2Pharm program at the <a href=\"http:\/\/pharmacy.uhh.hawaii.edu\/\">Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy<\/a>. The innovative pharmacist-care system is designed to reduce medication-related hospitalizations and emergency room visits by establishing teamwork between hospital and community pharmacists in rural counties of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island, Maui and <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>. It is expected to save over $27 million across the state. In <abbr>FY2015<\/abbr>, the program received $5.7 million in the third increment of a $14 million award by <abbr>NSF<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, during <abbr>FY2015<\/abbr> <abbr>UH<\/abbr> community college and university campuses were awarded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/11\/26\/69-million-for-native-hawaiian-education\/\">$69 million in federal grants to support programs serving Native Hawaiians<\/a>, from pre-school through college and career training.
