The annual July <span aria-label=\"hoolaulea\">ho&#699;olaule&#699;a<\/span>, or Hawaiian festival, draws about a hundred thousand people every year who come for a taste of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and the non-stop Hawaiian music and performances.<\/p>\n<p>Southern California has the largest population of <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> alumni outside of the 50th state along with thousands of Southern California residents with strong ties to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. For the first time in 2015, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa was a <abbr>LA<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"Hoolaulea\">Ho&#699;olaule&#699;a<\/span> participant and the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> representatives received a warm <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> welcome.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It makes a statement about the connection of the university to Hawaiians outside of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Chancellor <strong>Robert Bley-Vroman<\/strong>. &ldquo;The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> has a responsibility to educate and to educate Hawaiians and people from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and people associated with <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> everywhere.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Students and faculty from the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/hshk\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nui\u0101kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge<\/a> and other <abbr>UH<\/abbr> administrators, including the chancellor, staffed the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa booth near the front entrance.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36765\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36765\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/manoa-la-hoolaulea-hi-pride.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"340\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36765\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/manoa-la-hoolaulea-hi-pride.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/manoa-la-hoolaulea-hi-pride-260x143.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36765\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nui\u0101kea<\/span> School of Hawaiian Knowledge students<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They answered questions and provided information to prospective students and their parents, like the fact that students with Native Hawaiian ancestry may be eligible for in-state tuition. The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> contingent also promoted the wide variety of nationally and internationally recognized programs and opportunities M&#257;noa has to offer.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We have some people from Hawaiian language and Hawaiian studies, and we also have people talking about the graduate and undergraduate programs so we&#8217;re just showing all of our services and different colleges,&rdquo; said <strong>Christian Tabor<\/strong>, a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa student.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nui\u0101kea<\/span> students also gave demonstrations such as poi pounding, the ancient Hawaiian practice of pounding down cooked kalo or taro corms to a thick paste and adding water to create poi, a staple of the Hawaiian diet. Students also wowed the crowds with a number of Hawaiian music performances.<\/p>\n<p>The local <abbr>UH<\/abbr> alumni chapter has long been a part of the <abbr>LA<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"Hoolaulea\">Ho&#699;olaule&#699;a<\/span>. Organizers say <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa is also a natural fit.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s an opportunity for our young kids to go and talk to them about higher education and that&#8217;s what we wanted to push,&rdquo; said Sharon <span aria-label=\"Kuuipo\">Ku&#699;uipo<\/span> Paulo, president of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hiccsc.org\/\">Hawaiian Inter-Club Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation<\/a> made full use of the opportunity and sponsored an alumni event the Saturday night between the two-day <span aria-label=\"hoolaulea\">ho&#699;olaule&#699;a<\/span> at a nearby Hawaiian style restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>It gave <abbr>UH<\/abbr> alumni in the area a chance to connect with each other and current <abbr>UH<\/abbr> students and administrators.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think it is very important especially for a lot of us alumni who are living on the mainland,&rdquo; said 1982 <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa graduate <strong>Nolan Tanaka<\/strong>. &ldquo;Sometimes, you&#8217;re kind of dispersed but when we get together it feels like we are back home in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>On the second and final day of the <span aria-label=\"hoolaulea\">ho&#699;olaule&#699;a<\/span>, the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"Hawaiinuiakea\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½nui\u0101kea<\/span> students gave a traditional Hawaiian welcome to a group of incoming <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa students who just graduated from California high schools.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I feel like they just brought me into their family. Like I have been family with them forever and this is like some big reunion,&rdquo; said Alexandra James, an incoming <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa freshman. &ldquo;It was just so full of aloha and love. It was a wonderful experience.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The <abbr>LA<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"Hoolaulea\">Ho&#699;olaule&#699;a<\/span> is the perfect setting for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> to strengthen ties with the community and alumni&#8212;a Hawaiian oasis in the heart of Southern California.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This really feels like home,&rdquo; added Bley-Vroman. &ldquo;This could be <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Park. I feel like I am at home and the people here are so supportive. You see the aloha spirit is not just in the islands.
