  {"id":36732,"date":"2015-07-17T15:45:21","date_gmt":"2015-07-18T01:45:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=36732"},"modified":"2021-08-11T08:56:59","modified_gmt":"2021-08-11T18:56:59","slug":"states-future-leaders-honored-with-full-university-scholarships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/07\/17\/states-future-leaders-honored-with-full-university-scholarships\/","title":{"rendered":"State\u2019s future leaders honored with full university scholarships"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/r1U2avkzIns\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Entering <a href=\"http:\/\/westoahu.hawaii.edu\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8212;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> junior <strong>Coralyn Sunico<\/strong> wept as she explained what being the recipient of a University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Presidential Scholarship Award meant to her, as the first person in her family to attend college.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It means a lot, because growing up with my family, there was no one who could help, so I didn&#8217;t know what to do, I was so lost,&rdquo; Sunico said.  &ldquo;I just really wanted to continue school, because I wanted to gain that knowledge and help other people.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Kamehameha-<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> graduate and University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Regents Scholar <strong>Ciarra-Lynn Parinas<\/strong> echoed her gratitude.  &ldquo;This scholarship means the world to me,&rdquo; said Parinas, who plans to become an English teacher.  &ldquo;It means my family&#8217;s security.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Sunico and Parinas were among 30 outstanding University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> students honored at the 2015 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/raps\">Regents and Presidential Scholarship<\/a> Awards Dinner.  Home school graduate <strong>Rebekah Loving<\/strong>, who plans to study computer science at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo, was designated as the inaugural Senator Daniel K. Akaka Regents Scholar for Academic Excellence.  She chatted animatedly with the former senator during the event.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>PHOTOS<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/uhawaii\/sets\/72157656011713331\">2015 Regents and Presidential Scholarship Awards Dinner<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;The Regents and Presidential Scholars are the best <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> has to offer,&rdquo; said <strong>Randy Moore<\/strong>, chair of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/bor\">Board of Regents<\/a>.  &ldquo;Keep them here.  Have them inspire others as well as themselves, absorbing all the university has to offer.  Find their passion and pursue it.  Go forth and make <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> a better place.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Board of Regents established the Regents and Presidential Scholarships in 1986 to support students with a record of outstanding achievement at any <abbr>UH<\/abbr> campus.<\/p>\n<p>Regents Scholars receive a full tuition waiver for four years of undergraduate study.  Presidential Scholars receive a full tuition waiver for two years of <\/p>\n<p>undergraduate study. All scholars receive $4,000 a year and a one-time travel grant of $2,000.<\/p>\n<p>Regents Scholarships are awarded to 20 outstanding freshmen who receive an SAT combined score of at least 1950 on all three sections of the test or ACT combined score of at least 29, maintain at least a 3.5 <abbr>GPA<\/abbr> in academic subjects in high school and whose extracurricular achievements are shown to be remarkable.
