{"id":36667,"date":"2015-07-16T12:49:13","date_gmt":"2015-07-16T22:49:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=36667"},"modified":"2021-08-11T09:29:49","modified_gmt":"2021-08-11T19:29:49","slug":"project-imua-takes-education-out-of-this-atmosphere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/07\/16\/project-imua-takes-education-out-of-this-atmosphere\/","title":{"rendered":"Project Imua takes education out of this atmosphere"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qeMZ1ROSiKU\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/kauai.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a> graduate <strong>Marcus Yamaguchi<\/strong> has been mentoring <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> students who are following in his footsteps with Project Imua&#8212;a two-year collaboration between students and faculty at four University of <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> community colleges to design, fabricate and test scientific payloads to launch into space.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2015, some of the Project Imua team went to <abbr>NASA<\/abbr>&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers\/wallops\/home\">Wallops Flight Facility<\/a> in Virginia to do final testing and to prepare their payload for launch in August. Yamaguchi will be there to see his work sent into space aboard a <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> rocket.<\/p>\n<p>Said Yamaguchi, &ldquo;Project Imua more than anything is the realization that we have so many different components spread across the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System and when we begin to try and come together to collaborate on these projects, the possibilities really are endless.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>A $500,000 <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> grant is funding about 100 scholarships for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> community college students from <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/\">Windward<\/a> community colleges.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> was responsible for designing and building the payload&#8217;s main instrument, an ultraviolet spectrometer that will analyze the intensity of the sun&#8217;s radiation before it enters the earth&#8217;s atmosphere. <strong>Brennen Sprenger<\/strong>, who was only 16 when he enrolled at <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>, did all of the designs for the payload and the mechanical drawings.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;To see all of our work put together and the few of us that get to go to Wallops to see it launched, it&#8217;s really fun for all of us to be able to have an experience like that to see our work being put to use,&rdquo; said Sprenger.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> is the fourth campus in the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> System with a pre-engineering program. <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span>, Leeward and Windward community colleges also have pre-engineering.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Long term of course is that we hope to grow the skills of the individual campuses and have the campuses work together to be able to deliver payloads,&rdquo;
