This fall, the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>–West Oʻahu<\/span><\/a> and the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> will launch an innovative new pathway program for students interested in pursuing nursing careers. UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span> will offer a pre-nursing pathway<\/a>—pre-requisite nursing courses required for application to accredited nursing programs in the State of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Through this university partnership, students may apply to UH<\/abbr> Hilo’s bachelor of science in nursing degree program<\/a> after completing pre-nursing coursework at UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span>. UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span> students who are accepted into this ʻIke<\/span> Mauli Ola West Oʻahu<\/span> and UH<\/abbr> Hilo nursing partnership bachelor of science in nursing program will have the opportunity to take UH<\/abbr> Hilo nursing courses delivered from the UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span> campus in Kapolei and participate in hands-on classroom lab activities via UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span>’s future new Nursing Simulation Laboratory.<\/p>\n

“We are excited about the ʻIke<\/span> Mauli Ola partnership with UH<\/abbr> Hilo because it offers students from the leeward coast of Oʻahu<\/span> access to a nursing program in their region,” said UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span> PIKO<\/abbr> Project Director Melissa Saul<\/strong>. “Through this unique partnership, we hope to increase the number of underrepresented students in nursing and other health careers.”<\/p>\n

“UH<\/abbr> Hilo is delighted to assist UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span> in establishing a pathway for their students to the bachelor of science in nursing degree,” said UH<\/abbr> Hilo Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Matthew Platz<\/strong>. “This agreement is win-win for both campuses. The partnership will enable UH<\/abbr> Hilo to provide the bachelor of science in nursing program to both UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span> and additional UH<\/abbr> Hilo students. By the end of the agreement, UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span> will have a robust capacity for delivering the program to UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span> students, and UH<\/abbr> Hilo will have increased capacity as well.”<\/p>\n

“UH<\/abbr> Hilo School of Nursing faculty are committed to an educational pipeline with a focus on rural transcultural nursing,” said UH<\/abbr> Hilo School of Nursing Director Katharyn Daub<\/strong>. “This partnership with UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span> is a good fit for our students here in Hilo and Kapolei, and we are excited about the ability to increase our admission capacity.”<\/p>\n

Support services<\/h2>\n

While taking pre-nursing coursework, UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span> students will be provided with support services to prepare for admission to the ʻIke<\/span> Mauli Ola West Oʻahu<\/span> and UH<\/abbr> Hilo Nursing Partnership bachelor of science in nursing program. UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span> pre-nursing pathway students will also have the opportunity to participate in the ʻIke<\/span> Mauli Ola Learning Community, a U.S. Department of Education<\/a> Title III<\/abbr> grant-funded cohort of pre-nursing students that begin as freshmen at UH<\/abbr> West Oʻahu<\/span>. These ʻIke<\/span> Mauli Ola Learning Community students will receive assistance with academic coursework, learn about a holistic approach to health care that is inclusive of Native Hawaiian values and practices, and participate in West Oʻahu<\/span> area community engagement activities.<\/p>\n
