{"id":36031,"date":"2015-06-23T16:06:12","date_gmt":"2015-06-24T02:06:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=36031"},"modified":"2021-08-16T11:36:51","modified_gmt":"2021-08-16T21:36:51","slug":"hokulea-crew-and-uh-researchers-explore-great-barrier-reef","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/06\/23\/hokulea-crew-and-uh-researchers-explore-great-barrier-reef\/","title":{"rendered":"<span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span> crew and <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> researchers explore Great Barrier Reef"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q0ZaK9fKQLg\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Three key <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> staff contributed to Hawaiian voyaging canoe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hokulea.com\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span><\/a>&#8217;s exploration and research at Australia&#8217;s Great Barrier Reef in June.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chad Kalepa Baybayan<\/strong> is a master navigator and serves as astronomer in residence at <abbr>UH<\/abbr>&#8217;s <span aria-label=\"Imiloa\">&#699;Imiloa<\/span> Astronomy Center on the Big Island.<\/li>\n<li>\n<\/li>\n<li><abbr>UH<\/abbr> graduate assistant <strong>Haunani Kane<\/strong> is serving as <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span>&#8217;s assistant navigator.<\/li>\n<li><abbr>UH<\/abbr> researcher <strong>Ruth Gates<\/strong>, an expert on corals, joined the dive of the Great Barrier Reef.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Gates calls Hokulea&#8217;s worldwide voyage the single greatest study ever undertaken of the interaction between human beings and the ocean.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36038\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/hokulea-great-barrier-reef-people.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36038\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/hokulea-great-barrier-reef-people.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/hokulea-great-barrier-reef-people-260x146.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ruth Gates, Haunani Kane and Chad Kalepa Baybayan at the Reef HQ Aquarium in Townsville.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;In <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> we have fantastic reefs, but there are fewer species of corals and few species of fish,&rdquo; said Gates. &ldquo;When we were out on the Great Barrier Reef, the coral has so many different forms and shapes. The colors are incredible, there&#8217;s just an incredible visual diversity as you look out.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>While in Australia, the crew also visited the world&#8217;s largest living reef aquarium in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reefhq.com.au\/\">Reef <abbr>HQ<\/abbr> Aquarium<\/a> in Townsville. It inspired discussions about potential collaborations for the future.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The fact that they could raise something like 70 different species of coral in a single fish tank and have it be thriving with fish and limu, it was just remarkable,&rdquo; said Kane.<\/p>\n<p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> is an education partner in <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span>&#8217;s M&#257;lama H&#333;nua Worldwide Voyage, which will cover 27 nations through June 2017.
