{"id":35806,"date":"2015-06-18T14:19:27","date_gmt":"2015-06-19T00:19:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=35806"},"modified":"2021-08-19T09:41:13","modified_gmt":"2021-08-19T19:41:13","slug":"hawaii-cc-launches-new-summer-stem-camp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/06\/18\/hawaii-cc-launches-new-summer-stem-camp\/","title":{"rendered":"<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> launches new Summer <abbr title=\"science, technology, engineering, and math\">STEM<\/abbr> Camp"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/hawaii-stem-summer-camp.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/hawaii-stem-summer-camp.jpg\" alt=\"summer camp\" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-35811\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/hawaii-stem-summer-camp.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/hawaii-stem-summer-camp-260x173.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College<\/a> is hosting a brand-new Summer <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Camp June 15-26 in an effort to interest middle school students in science, technology, engineering, and math (<abbr>STEM<\/abbr>) with the ultimate goal of increasing the number of college graduates in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> with expertise in <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> fields.<\/p>\n<p>Students have been engaged in hands-on experiences at the college campus and in the community as they learn about biology and astronomy.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;One of the strategic directions for the <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a> is to increase the number of <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> graduates,&rdquo; said <strong>Christopher Manaseri<\/strong>, the dean of Liberal Arts and Public Services at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>. &ldquo;This is in anticipation of career opportunities related to technical fields as our society matures into the 21st century. One of the goals of the <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Camp is to encourage students at a critical juncture in their education so that if they are interested in <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> careers and fields of study, they can be well-prepared for the math and other skills they will need when they get to college.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More photos from STEM summer camp on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/53092216@N07\/sets\/72157654675236336\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Flickr page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><abbr>STEM<\/abbr> learning opportunities critical for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Camp is part of a broader effort at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> called the <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Enhancement Initiative that began during the 2014-2015 academic year. A committee has been meeting monthly since last October to explore ways the college can strengthen its <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> programs. During its research, the group recognized a need for better outreach, and that&#8217;s the reason for the <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Camp.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> in particular has a need to grow its own graduates to fill positions that may require <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> skill sets instead of being reliant on importing <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> workers from the mainland,&rdquo; said Manaseri.<\/p>\n<p>To create the <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Camp, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> partnered with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.p20hawaii.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> P-20 Partnerships for Education<\/a> (P-20) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiipublicschools.org\/Pages\/Home.aspx\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> State Department of Education<\/a>&#8217;s <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Coordinator for the Hilo-Waikea Complex.<\/p>\n<p>P-20 is a statewide collaboration led by the Executive Office on Early Learning, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Education and the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> System with the goal of improving educational outcomes for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>. <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> P-20 works to strengthen the education pipeline from early childhood through higher education to achieve college and career success for all <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s students.<\/p>\n<p>A P-20 College Access Challenge Grant (<abbr>CACG<\/abbr>) Program has funded the Summer <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Camp.
