One of the goals of the <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Camp is to encourage students at a critical juncture in their education so that if they are interested in <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> careers and fields of study, they can be well-prepared for the math and other skills they will need when they get to college.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>More photos from STEM summer camp on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/53092216@N07\/sets\/72157654675236336\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Flickr page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><abbr>STEM<\/abbr> learning opportunities critical for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Camp is part of a broader effort at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> called the <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Enhancement Initiative that began during the 2014-2015 academic year. A committee has been meeting monthly since last October to explore ways the college can strengthen its <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> programs. During its research, the group recognized a need for better outreach, and that&#8217;s the reason for the <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Camp.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> in particular has a need to grow its own graduates to fill positions that may require <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> skill sets instead of being reliant on importing <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> workers from the mainland,&rdquo; said Manaseri.<\/p>\n<p>To create the <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Camp, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> partnered with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.p20hawaii.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> P-20 Partnerships for Education<\/a> (P-20) and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiipublicschools.org\/Pages\/Home.aspx\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Department of Education<\/a>&#8217;s <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Coordinator for the Hilo-Waikea Complex.<\/p>\n<p>P-20 is a statewide collaboration led by the Executive Office on Early Learning, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Department of Education and the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> System with the goal of improving educational outcomes for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> P-20 works to strengthen the education pipeline from early childhood through higher education to achieve college and career success for all <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s students.<\/p>\n<p>A P-20 College Access Challenge Grant (<abbr>CACG<\/abbr>) Program has funded the Summer <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> Camp.
