  {"id":35607,"date":"2015-06-15T13:27:30","date_gmt":"2015-06-15T23:27:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=35607"},"modified":"2021-08-23T15:24:10","modified_gmt":"2021-08-24T01:24:10","slug":"imiloa-launches-mobile-outreach-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/06\/15\/imiloa-launches-mobile-outreach-program\/","title":{"rendered":"\u02bbImiloa launches mobile outreach program"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/hilo-imiloa-manu.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/hilo-imiloa-manu.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"322\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-35612\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/hilo-imiloa-manu.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/hilo-imiloa-manu-260x135.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/imiloahawaii.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Imiloa\">&#699;Imiloa<\/span> Astronomy Center<\/a>, an outreach center of the <a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a>, launched <a href=\"http:\/\/imiloahawaii.org\/258\/manu-imiloa-outreach\"><abbr>MANU<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"Imiloa\">&#699;Imiloa<\/span><\/a>, a mobile outreach program aimed at sharing <span aria-label=\"Imiloa\">&#699;Imiloa<\/span>&#8217;s unique brand of culture-based science education across the island.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in the fall of 2015, <abbr>MANU<\/abbr> (Modern and Ancient ways of Navigating our Universe) will take <span aria-label=\"Imiloa\">&#699;Imiloa<\/span> staff on the road with an interactive curriculum inspired by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hokulea.com\/\">Polynesian Voyaging Society<\/a>&#8217;s epic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hokulea.com\/worldwide-voyage\/\">Worldwide Voyage<\/a>, and designed to explore the skills involved in non-instrument ocean navigation or wayfinding.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As we prepare to celebrate <span aria-label=\"Imiloa\">&#699;Imiloa<\/span>&#8217;s second decade in 2016, we expect this new initiative to dramatically expand the programs offered at our Hilo center, making science accessible and culturally relevant to new audiences across our island and our state,&rdquo; says <strong><span aria-label=\"Kaiu\">Ka&#699;iu<\/span> Kimura<\/strong>, executive director.<\/p>\n<h2>Two outreach formats<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/imiloahawaii.org\/257\/manu-imiloa-template\"><abbr>NOIO<\/abbr><\/a> (Non-instrument Orientation, an Introduction to Oceanic Wayfinding) is a 30 to 60 minute package that can be delivered on request by K&#8211;12 schools and community centers, or offered as part of local events. Audiences of all ages gather around a model of the Hawaiian star compass or sit inside <span aria-label=\"Imiloa\">&#699;Imiloa<\/span>&#8217;s digital portable planetarium to learn how wayfinders rely upon the stars and their relationship with the environment to determine course and direction.<\/p>\n<p>The second offering, <a href=\"http:\/\/imiloahawaii.org\/260\/manu-imiloa-kolea\"><abbr>K&#332;LEA<\/abbr><\/a> (Keeping Our Legacy of Exploration Alive), is a two-week plus curriculum package designed specifically for middle school teachers to adopt for seventh and eighth grade science or math classes. Titled &ldquo;The Geometry of Wayfinding,&rdquo; it explores the geometry and science that undergird traditional Polynesian non-instrumental navigation. Created using Moenah&#257;, a culture-based curriculum design and instructional model, and developed with the guidance of a teacher advisory committee, this experience aligns with Common Core State Math Standards, N&#257; Honua Mauli Ola Cultural Guidelines for Learners and Next Generation Science Standards.<\/p>\n<p>K&#332;LEA comprises six units designed to be taught over two weeks, with one unit delivered in an outreach visit by <span aria-label=\"Imiloa\">&#699;Imiloa<\/span> staff, and the others pre and post-visit lessons to be taught by the classroom teacher.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Geometry of Wayfinding explores real-life math applications, showing students how wayfinders utilize their knowledge of angle degrees and angle pair relationships in the Hawaiian Star Compass to organize the horizon, calibrate and properly orient themselves to their surrounding environment and to determine position,&rdquo; says <strong>Celeste <span aria-label=\"Hao\">Ha&#699;o<\/span><\/strong>, <span aria-label=\"Imiloa\">&#699;Imiloa<\/span>&#8217;s outreach coordinator who recently served as apprentice navigator aboard <span aria-label=\"Hokulea\">H\u014dk\u016ble&#699;a<\/span> as part of the M&#257;lama Honua Worldwide Voyage.<\/p>\n<h2>Specialized training for teachers<\/h2>\n<p>Along with curriculum, <abbr>K&#332;LEA<\/abbr> offers participating teachers specialized training, access to customized educational materials and traveling toolkits and opportunities to engage with crewmembers from the Worldwide Voyage.<\/p>\n<p>The 2015&#8211;2016 <abbr>K&#332;LEA<\/abbr> program will be limited to a first cohort of 10 enthusiastic and passionate middle school teachers across <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island.
