{"id":35587,"date":"2015-06-22T09:41:31","date_gmt":"2015-06-22T19:41:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=35587"},"modified":"2021-08-16T15:19:22","modified_gmt":"2021-08-17T01:19:22","slug":"uh-manoa-hires-new-title-ix-coordinator","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/06\/22\/uh-manoa-hires-new-title-ix-coordinator\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa hires new Title <abbr title=\"nine\">IX<\/abbr> coordinator"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35694\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35694\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/uwono-d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"350\" class=\"size-full wp-image-35694\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/uwono-d.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/uwono-d-186x260.jpg 186w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35694\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dee Uwono<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> has taken a key step in expanding its sexual harassment and sexual violence prevention programs by hiring a dedicated Title <abbr>IX<\/abbr> Coordinator. <strong>Dee Uwono<\/strong> will oversee the university&#8217;s response to all Title <abbr>IX<\/abbr> complaints, which includes resolving Title <abbr>IX<\/abbr> disputes, and providing training to prevent discrimination on the basis of sex.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.manoa.hawaii.edu\/titleix\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Title <abbr>IX<\/abbr> Office website<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Uwono established <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.studentaffairs.manoa.hawaii.edu\/departments\/judicial_affairs.php\">Judicial Affairs Office<\/a> and led it as director from November 2007 to August 2014. In that capacity, she served as lead investigator for all Title <abbr>IX<\/abbr> and other discrimination cases filed by students. Uwono has also trained and coordinated the training of Title <abbr>IX<\/abbr> coordinators across the 10 campuses of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System, served on the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Title <abbr>IX<\/abbr> Steering Committee, and is currently a member of the president&#8217;s Title <abbr>IX<\/abbr> Steering Committee.<\/p>\n<p>From September 2014 to April 2015, Uwono was appointed interim dean of students at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Honolulu Community College<\/a>, where she was the Title <abbr>IX<\/abbr> deputy coordinator for students.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.manoa.hawaii.edu\/titleix\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Title <abbr>IX<\/abbr> Office<\/a> will report directly to M&#257;noa Chancellor <strong>Robert Bley-Vroman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are pleased that Dee will lead the Title <abbr>IX<\/abbr> Office during this critical time in the development of our program,&rdquo; said Bley-Vroman. &ldquo;Her appointment demonstrates our commitment to creating a safe and nondiscriminatory learning environment, where students, faculty, staff and visitors know how to get help if they need it.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Said Uwono, &ldquo;I look forward to implementing a system that ensures reports and complaints are handled consistently, fairly and efficiently, and to coordinate effectively with advocacy groups, service providers, public safety and local law enforcement representatives.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Uwono earned her doctor of education degree in educational leadership at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usc.edu\/\">University of Southern California<\/a>, Rossier School of Education in 2010. She holds a masters in educational administration and a <abbr>BA<\/abbr> in zoology from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa.<\/p>\n<p>Uwono&#8217;s hire comes as the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> System recently announced an update to its sexual assault and harassment policy (<a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.edu\/policy\/?action=viewPolicy&#038;policySection=ep&#038;policyChapter=1&#038;policyNumber=204&#038;menuView=closed\">EP 1.204 Policy and Procedural Guidelines on Sexual Harassment, Sexual Assault, Domestic Violence, Dating Violence and Stalking<\/a>).
