  {"id":35420,"date":"2015-06-04T15:57:13","date_gmt":"2015-06-05T01:57:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=35420"},"modified":"2021-08-26T13:57:02","modified_gmt":"2021-08-26T23:57:02","slug":"marine-corps-base-hawaii-fast-fill-hydrogen-fueling-station-enabling-zero-emission-transportation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/06\/04\/marine-corps-base-hawaii-fast-fill-hydrogen-fueling-station-enabling-zero-emission-transportation\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine Corps Base <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> fast-fill hydrogen fueling station enabling zero emission transportation"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hnei.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Natural Energy Institute (<abbr>HNEI<\/abbr>)<\/a> has commissioned a &ldquo;fast-fill&rdquo; high-pressure hydrogen fueling station at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcbhawaii.marines.mil\/\">Marine Corps Base <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> (<abbr>MCBH<\/abbr>)<\/a>. This state-of-the-art station was developed to support a fleet of General Motors Equinox fuel cell electric vehicles leased by the Office of Naval Research for use by Marine Corps and Navy personnel on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The fuel cells in these vehicles work by using hydrogen to create electricity that is then used to power an electric motor. The only emission is water. Successful hydrogen fueling operations will help identify zero emission sustainable transportation solutions.<\/p>\n<p>Operational since November 2014, this fueling station was recently certified for unattended operation, allowing drivers to self-fill their cars just as they would do at any gasoline fueling station. Unattended operation will serve as a model for the installation of private stations throughout the state.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We have been really impressed with the fill speed and control algorithms of the hydrogen station at <abbr>MCBH<\/abbr>,&rdquo; said <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gm.com\/\">General Motors&#8217;<\/a> <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Site Leader Chris Colquitt. &ldquo;It is exciting to experience consistent four-minute 700 bar fills.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Added <abbr>HNEI<\/abbr> Director <strong>Richard Rocheleau<\/strong>, &ldquo;We are excited that the  <abbr>MCBH<\/abbr> hydrogen station is now servicing fast-fill by the drivers without an attendant&#8212;a first in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>.
