{"id":35354,"date":"2015-06-08T08:01:42","date_gmt":"2015-06-08T18:01:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=35354"},"modified":"2021-08-24T15:25:48","modified_gmt":"2021-08-25T01:25:48","slug":"uh-manoa-praised-for-continued-excellence-in-academic-achievement-educational-effectiveness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/06\/08\/uh-manoa-praised-for-continued-excellence-in-academic-achievement-educational-effectiveness\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa praised for continued excellence in academic achievement, educational effectiveness"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/manoa-hawaii-hall-students.jpg\" alt=\"Hawaii Hall\" width=\"620\" height=\"382\" class=\"size-full wp-image-35486\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/manoa-hawaii-hall-students.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/manoa-hawaii-hall-students-260x160.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>At the halfway point of a 10-year accreditation term granted in 2011, the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> has been praised by the W<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wascsenior.org\/\">estern Association of Schools and Colleges<\/a> (<abbr>WASC<\/abbr>) Senior College and University Commission (<abbr>WSCUC<\/abbr>) Interim Report Committee.  <abbr>WASC<\/abbr>, which accredits colleges and universities in California, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and the Pacific, requires institutions to submit interim reports at the halfway point between accreditation cycles.<\/p>\n<p>In a June 1, 2015 letter, <abbr>WASC<\/abbr> Vice President Barbara Gross Davis wrote that panel members were &ldquo;extremely impressed&rdquo; by M&#257;noa&#8217;s Interim Report and its progress in several areas, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Retention, Graduation and Completion: The panel reviewing the report praised the strategies <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa has put into place to bolster retention and completion rates, including improved articulation with Â鶹´«Ã½community colleges, investments in gateway courses and strengthening the degree audit system. <\/li>\n<li>Student Learning Outcomes: The panel commended <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa for its well-crafted assessment process and faculty involvement in aligning and assessing student learning outcomes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The accreditation process is extremely important, both as a marker of institutional quality and because accreditation is required by the U.S. Department of Education for students to be able to access the federal student loan system.  It is managed at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa by Accreditation Liaison Officer <strong>Wendy Pearson<\/strong>, who works in the Office of the <a href=\"https:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/ovcaa\/\">Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Commented Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs <strong>Reed Dasenbrock<\/strong>, &ldquo;This excellent report is the result of hard work by faculty, staff and administrators across campus, and shows that we continue to improve the undergraduate experience at M&#257;noa.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Chancellor <strong>Robert Bley-Vroman<\/strong> thanked the review panel for their highly positive evaluation. &ldquo;In 2011, when we received a 10-year accreditation period from <abbr>WASC<\/abbr>&#8212;the longest possible term of accreditation and the longest of any institution in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8212;we were very proud of that achievement.
