The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prh.noaa.gov\/cphc\/\">Central Pacific Hurricane Center<\/a> is forecasting a 70 percent chance of an above-normal season, based upon the expectation of El Ni&ntilde;o continuing and possibly strengthening as<br \/>\nthe hurricane season progresses. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Now<\/strong> is the time to take the basic steps of hurricane preparedness:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pay attention to weather alerts<\/li>\n<li>Develop a plan<\/li>\n<li>Put together a disaster kit<\/li>\n<li>Prepare your home (or dorm! see below)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As history and the 2015 preparedness hashtag remind us, #ItOnlyTakesOne.<\/p>\n<h2>A reminder from the past<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35282\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35282\" style=\"width: 620px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/kauai-iniki.jpg\" alt=\"black and white photo of building rubble\" width=\"620\" height=\"406\" class=\"size-full wp-image-35282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/kauai-iniki.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/kauai-iniki-260x170.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35282\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Remains of the Hawaiian Studies Center after Hurricane Iniki. It had been built just eleven months before the 160 mph winds of Iniki hit the <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College campus. From <em>M&#257;lamalama<\/em> (<abbr>UH<\/abbr> Press)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Called the &ldquo;most drastic force hitting community colleges in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>,&rdquo; hurricanes have been responsible for major damage at <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College. <em>M&#257;lamalama: A History of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span><\/em> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhpress.hawaii.edu\/p-1259-9780824820060.aspx\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Press<\/a>) notes that in 1982, &ldquo;Iwa filled the flat roof of the library with water, causing its collapse; damage to books and furnishings was devastating.&rdquo; Ten years later, another hurricane walloped the island.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&ldquo;Iniki was much fiercer. In its destructive path, three wooden buildings housing the campus child-care center, the Hawaiian studies program, and the apprenticeship program, were entirely destroyed, and the theatre, then under construction, was severely damaged. The campus served as a shelter for two to three thousand evacuees, many of them tourists. Classes were canceled, and faculty members helped prepare and distribute food.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Amazingly, the college reopened within two weeks, running on generators until commercial electric power was restored a month after the storm.<\/p>\n<h2>Pay attention to weather alerts<\/h2>\n<p>Traditional and social media offer many options to stay informed about the weather.<\/p>\n<p>Weather links from <abbr>NOAA<\/abbr>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> and other sources are compiled on our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/weather\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Weather and Surf Reports page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/alert\/index.php\">Sign up for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Alert<\/a> to be informed via text message about emergency situations affecting any of our 10 campuses.<\/p>\n<p>The Pacific Disaster Center has a free app Disaster Alert app that gives updates about weather disasters globally. Custom alerts are available via subscriptions that run $10\/year. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pdc.org\/solutions\/tools\/disaster-alert-app\/\">Learn more<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Plan and prepare<\/h2>\n<p>&ldquo;Dennis Hwang, a coastal hazard mitigation specialist at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/seagrant.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">Sea Grant<\/a> program, said people should stock up on food, water, medication and gasoline when preparing for a major storm. He added that people should keep important documents, a radio and cash on hand when tropical storms approach. &lsquo;Have a kit, have a plan and practice it,&rsquo; he said. &lsquo;The whole idea here is to be weather ready.&rsquo;&rdquo; (via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2015\/05\/26\/pacific-hurricane-season-active_n_7446114.html\">Huffington Post<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Ask yourself: Where is the nearest shelter?
