  {"id":34014,"date":"2015-04-22T13:38:43","date_gmt":"2015-04-22T23:38:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=34014"},"modified":"2021-09-15T12:44:55","modified_gmt":"2021-09-15T22:44:55","slug":"hawaii-cc-features-high-quality-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/04\/22\/hawaii-cc-features-high-quality-education\/","title":{"rendered":"<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr title=\"Community College\">CC<\/abbr> features high quality education"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 3<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><div class=\"responsive-video-wrap\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"381\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8G5B8YTzBEY\" title=\"YouTube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College<\/a>, located in Hilo and of the Kona side on the island of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, offers 25 high quality programs ranging from <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/autobody\/\">auto body repair and painting<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/substance-abuse-counseling\/\">substance abuse counseling<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/administration-of-justice\/\">administration of justice<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/eced\/\">early childhood education<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/nursing\/\">nursing<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/culinary-arts\/\">culinary<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/carpentry\/\">carpentry<\/a> and more.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Coming here, it really gives you a good introduction into the industry and what to expect when you are going into the industry,&rdquo; said <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CCM<\/abbr> student <abbr>Cascade Mather<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/hawaii-cc-courses.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-34027\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/hawaii-cc-courses.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/hawaii-cc-courses-260x146.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Students can pursue a certificate or an associate degree. The college also offers degrees in subjects like Hawaiian studies and natural science that are transferable to any four-year institution in the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We have a lot of opportunities here to start in a smaller class setting and then move up. It is a good point here at <abbr title=\"Hawaii Community College\">HCC<\/abbr>,&rdquo; said student <strong>Karen Nishimoto<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think it was a good plan to start off here first and then go off to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> instead of having all those expenses,&rdquo; said student <strong>Lavinia Manusekai<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Like all of the schools in the <a href=\"http:\/\/uhcc.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Community Colleges<\/a> system, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College offers affordable tuition, small class sizes and hands-on learning and instruction.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Our instructors are very committed to student success. They try to get to know each student,&rdquo; said <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College Chancellor <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/chancellor\/\"><strong>Noreen Yamane<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Student <strong>Selena Victorinio<\/strong> said, &ldquo;I am just loving the program and loving that we have two great professors that teach this program. They are willing to go a long ways with the students.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;They are giving me every tool they can possibly give me to make sure I succeed,&rdquo; said student <strong>Jon Botticelli<\/strong>. &ldquo;Most of us aren&#8217;t used to that in life. Most of us aren&#8217;t used to be given what we need to succeed and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College has done that.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Living Hawaiian culture<\/h2>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College is also the only college in the world where students can obtain a degree in <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/hawaiian-studies\/\">hula<\/a>. There are also degrees in <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/hawaiian-studies\/index.php\">Hawaiian studies<\/a> where students can choose to pursue the <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/humd\/iolahaloa\/mahiai.html\"><span aria-label=\"mahiai\">mahi&#699;ai<\/span><\/a> track, which is traditional Hawaiian farming, or the <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/humd\/iolahaloa\/lawaia.html\"><span aria-label=\"lawaia\">lawai&#699;a<\/span><\/a> track, traditional Hawaiian and ocean resources.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Hawaiian culture and the preservation of the language is very, very important to us,&rdquo; said Yamane. &ldquo;We&#8217;d like everybody on our campus at least to have some respect for the Hawaiian culture and appreciation for the Hawaiian culture.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>That includes a strong sense of community and working together. Students in five different programs collaborate each year to design, build and landscape a home for a Native Hawaiian family, in a partnership with the Department of Hawaiian Homelands. This gives the students hands-on experience and the joy of presenting a family with a new home that they could not otherwise afford.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I have been working real hard for this day&#8212;waiting for it to come. We learn everything on this house&#8212;everything from foundation to finish,&rdquo; said Jacob Ramos, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> carpentry student.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The contractors that hire them, they always come back and they always comment about the students and how confident they are. And that&#8217;s what we are trying to do for them,&rdquo; said Gene Harada, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC carpentry professor.<\/abbr><\/p>\n<h2>The next phase<\/h2>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College will open a new state-of-the-art, 21st century facility in West <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> in fall 2015. <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.hawaii.edu\/palamanui\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College&#8211;P&#257;lamanui<\/a> will deliver a variety of programs such as nursing, culinary and liberal arts.
