  {"id":33267,"date":"2015-05-01T08:50:16","date_gmt":"2015-05-01T18:50:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=33267"},"modified":"2021-09-13T16:43:47","modified_gmt":"2021-09-14T02:43:47","slug":"uh-board-of-regents-appointments-confirmed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/05\/01\/uh-board-of-regents-appointments-confirmed\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Board of Regents appointments confirmed"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 3<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p>The <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Senate has confirmed the appointments of <strong>Wayne Higaki<\/strong>, <strong>Simeon Acoba, Jr.<\/strong>, <strong>Helen Nielsen<\/strong>, <strong>Ernest Wilson, Jr.<\/strong>, <strong>David Iha<\/strong> and <strong>Michael McEnerney<\/strong> to the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Board of Regents on April 30, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;This is an exceptional group of leaders with a range of diverse skills and expertise in the operations of large organizations,&rdquo; said Governor David Ige. &ldquo;I am confident they will contribute to the continued success of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> System.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Nominees<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wayne Higaki<\/strong>, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> County, will serve through June 30, 2016. <br \/>\nHigaki is the chief development officer at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhch.com\/cms\/view.aspx\/Show\/Home\">North <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Community Hospital<\/a>, an affiliate of The Queen&#8217;s Health Systems. He is chair of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> County&#8217;s Workforce Investment Board and a member of the Workforce Development Council for the State of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. He graduated from <span aria-label=\"Honokaa\">Honoka&#699;a<\/span> High School and earned an associate of science degree at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Simeon Acoba, Jr.<\/strong>, Honolulu County, was currently serving on an interim basis and will serve through June 30, 2017. <br \/>\nAcoba served on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.courts.state.hi.us\/courts\/supreme\/hawaii_supreme_court.html\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Supreme Court<\/a> for 14 years. Previously, he served as a judge at various levels for 20 years. He continues to be active in judicial organizations and has received many awards for his work. He received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> and earned his juris doctorate from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.northwestern.edu\/\">Northwestern School of Law<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Ernest Wilson, Jr.<\/strong>, Maui County, will serve from July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2020. <br \/>\nWilson is a seasoned executive with more than 50 years of experience in the fields of travel, hospitality, food service, military logistics and higher education. In the civilian arena, he served in numerous positions for hospitality organizations including Holiday Inns, Embassy Suites, Sheraton Hotels and Outrigger Hotels and Resorts. In the military, he achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel leading several large complex organizations. He is a graduate of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ksbe.edu\/\">Kamehameha Schools<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornell.edu\/\">Cornell University<\/a> (BS), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fiu.edu\/\">Florida International University<\/a> (MS) and <a href=\"http:\/\/cibu.edu\/\">California International Business University<\/a> (honorary doctorate of business). <\/li>\n<li><strong>David Iha<\/strong>, <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> County, will serve through June 30, 2017.<br \/>\nIha has a long history of service to the <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> System<\/a> and has been an outstanding leader at <a href=\"http:\/\/kauai.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a>. While there, he was part of the leadership team that designed and built a new campus, and in his 16-year tenure as provost, he expanded the curriculum and established exchange programs with educational institutions in Okinawa and mainland Japan. He served as the executive administrator and secretary of the Board of Regents from 1998 until his retirement in 2006. He is a graduate of <span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> High School and received a bachelor&#8217;s degree from<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wheaton.edu\/\"> Wheaton College<\/a> and a master&#8217;s degree from <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Michael McEnerney<\/strong>, Honolulu County, will serve from July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2020. <br \/>\nMcEnerney is president of McEnerney Shimabukuro Okazaki &#038; Fujita <abbr>CPA<\/abbr>s <abbr>AAC<\/abbr>. He holds a <abbr>CPA<\/abbr> certificate and is registered in Illinois and a <abbr>CPA<\/abbr> license\/permit and certificate in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. He was awarded a <abbr>BS<\/abbr> degree at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uwplatt.edu\/\">University of Wisconsin-Platteville<\/a> with a double major in accounting and business administration (finance), an <abbr>MBA<\/abbr> from the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa and a <abbr>JD<\/abbr> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northwestern.edu\/\">Northwestern University<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li><strong>Helen Nielsen<\/strong>, Maui County, was currently serving on an interim basis and will serve the remainder of her term which ends June 30, 2015. <br \/>\nNielson has a passion for community service and environmental sustainability. She was a founder of the Maui Coastal Land Trust and served on its board. Nielsen is co-owner\/manager of commercial properties in Wailuku, Maui and Waimea, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. She studied business at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kbcc.cuny.edu\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Kingsborough Community College<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pace.edu\/\">Pace University<\/a>, both in New York. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s note: This article was updated after the senate confirmed Gov.
