Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (<abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>) is ranked in the top 20 of medical schools in the country, based on the 2016 <a href=\"http:\/\/grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com\/best-graduate-schools\/top-medical-schools\/primary-care-rankings?int=af3309&#038;int=b3b50a&#038;int=aac509\">&ldquo;Best U.S. Medical Schools&rdquo;<\/a> rankings released on March 10 by <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.usnews.com\/\">U.S. News &#38; World Report<\/a><\/em>. Climbing steadily on the list for several years, this is the medical school&#8217;s best ever showing in the rankings, which are closely watched among the country&#8217;s 171 accredited medical schools.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>&#8217;s ranking&#8212;19<sup>th<\/sup> in the U.S. for primary care medicine&#8212;represents a leap from 2015&#8217;s 57<sup>th<\/sup> place finish. The 19<sup>th<\/sup> ranking in primary care is shared with <a href=\"http:\/\/ucdavis.edu\/\">University of California-Davis<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/ucsd.edu\/\"><abbr>UC<\/abbr>-San Diego<\/a>, and the medical schools at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uchicago.edu\/\">University of Chicago<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pitt.edu\/\">University of Pittsburgh<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/wustl.edu\/\">Washington University in St. Louis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa medical school also ranked in the top 75 in research, landing at 74<sup>th<\/sup>, tied with the <a href=\"http:\/\/rwjms.rutgers.edu\/\">Robert Wood Johnson School of Medicine<\/a> at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rutgers.edu\/\">Rutgers University<\/a>. Last year <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> research was ranked 78<sup>th<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are very proud to be selected in the top 20 among U.S. medical schools in primary care,&rdquo; said <strong>Jerris Hedges<\/strong>, dean of <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>. &ldquo;Every year more than half of our graduating physicians choose to continue training toward licensure in primary care fields. These are physicians on the front lines of healthcare delivery\u2014specialists in internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology and emergency medicine. The <em>U.S. News &#38; World Report<\/em> scores continue to show that <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> is gaining additional national recognition amongst its fellow U.S. medical schools.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We are so grateful to our hard-working faculty (including 1,203 volunteer <abbr>MD<\/abbr> faculty), our students, staff, our alumni and our partners in health at the major medical centers throughout the state,&rdquo; said Hedges. &rdquo;We also enjoy significant support from Governor David Ige, members of the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> State Legislature, the university <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span> and the citizens of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, and we want to express to them our deeply felt mahalo,&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The entire campus joins me in congratulating <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>, Dean Hedges and the <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"ohana\">&#699;ohana<\/span> for the school&#8217;s stellar vault into the top 20 of this prestigious U.S. ranking for primary care medicine,&rdquo; said Âé¶¹´«Ã½M&#257;noa Chancellor <strong>Robert Bley-Vroman<\/strong>. &ldquo;Such recognition crystalizes the excellence of <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>, and affirms why our leadership continues to support the place of learning that produces physicians at an exemplary and now nationally recognized level.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Governor David Ige said &ldquo;Fifty years ago the John A.
