In celebration of National Career and Technical Education (CTE<\/abbr>) month, more than 300 high school juniors and seniors and 40 teachers from across Oʻahu<\/span> flooded the Honolulu Community College<\/a> campus for I Love CTE Day<\/a>, the college’s annual high school recruitment event. <\/p>\n

I Love CTE<\/abbr> Day featured 15 break-out sessions based on career interest filled and Honolulu’s renowned fashion technology program<\/a> produced a memorable fashion show featuring the hottest student designs.<\/p>\n

“In partnership with Gear Up Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span><\/a>, we wanted to expose students to the wide variety of CTE<\/abbr> and liberal arts programs we have to offer,” explains Michael Barros<\/strong>, director of secondary programs. “Some of these programs are exclusive to Honolulu CC<\/abbr>. Students experienced campus life, asked faculty questions and even had an opportunity to apply for the fall 2015 semester.”<\/p>\n

“Our theme is Building a Community of Heroes. Within every community is the demand for technical professionals who are able to provide needed services. At the community colleges, we are preparing individuals to have successful careers in their area of interest while making a livable wage,” Barros continues.<\/p>\n

Twelve public high schools participated in the February 20 event—Campbell, Castle, Farrington, Kailua, McKinley, Nanakuli, Olomana, Pearl City, Radford, Roosevelt, Waialua and Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> School for the Deaf and Blind.<\/p>\n

Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Graduation Initiative<\/h2>\n

UH<\/abbr>’s Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Graduation Initiative<\/a> is about creating opportunities and transforming lives for students and their families through higher education by increasing adult degree holders in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> to 55 percent of the population by 2025. I Love CTE<\/abbr> Day is an opportunity to make a lasting impression on high school students who are deciding on a career path.
