This year, the cohort will visit Aotearoa, New Zealand, where participants will focus on how to support the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/strategicdirections\/high-performance-mission-driven-system\/\">strategic goal of being a premier indigenous-serving institution<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The program was funded by the James and Juanita C. Wo Foundation.<\/p>\n<h2>Inaugural Wo Global Learning Champions<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Christine Quintana<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Larissa Leslie<\/strong>, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mary Hattori<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kapiolani.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Community College<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ryan Girard<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/kauai.hawaii.edu\/\"><span aria-label=\"Kauai\">Kaua&#699;i<\/span> Community College<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Joyce Yamada<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/maui.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Liping Liu<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Maui College<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ellen Ishida-Babineau<\/strong>, <a href=\"http:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\/\">Windward Community College<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Expansion of existing Wo Learning Champions program<\/h2>\n<p>The Wo Global Learning Champions expands the existing Wo Learning Champions, a professional development program James Wo and his brother Robert initially funded for the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Community Colleges in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Brother Bob and I have long believed that international education is critical to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s success today and in the future,&rdquo; stated Jim Wo. He added, &ldquo;We have been encouraged by the progress of the professional development program under <strong>Louise Pagotto&#8217;s<\/strong> leadership and we support her aspiration to make the community colleges more globally-connected places of learning.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>WGLC<\/abbr> provides a global initiative for professional development and participants will have first-hand experience interacting with their counterparts in higher education institutions in other countries.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The importance of international education to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> cannot be overestimated,&rdquo; said Vice President for Community Colleges <strong>John Morton<\/strong>. &ldquo;An international education helps our educators develop an understanding and appreciation for the cultural differences among people in their immediate environment as well as throughout the world.
