The cohort underwent <span aria-label=\"Oniki\">&#699;&#363;niki<\/span> (graduation) rites in December led by kumu and <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> professor of Hawaiian studies <strong>Taupouri Tangar&#333;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Unuolehua cohort was trained to make possible the creation of cultural leadership through hula, an effort brought about through the tenets of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System initiative, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Papa O Ke Ao, a plan to make <abbr>UH<\/abbr> a leader in indigenous education. The Unukupukupu h&#257;lau is home-based at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> and is an experiential program, directed by Tangar&#333;, created to deliver an associate of arts in Hawaiian Studies with an emphasis on hula.<\/p>\n<p>Graduates included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Kainoa Ariola<\/strong> (executive director of the Career and Academic Advising Center at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo), <a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/news\/stories\/2015\/02\/12\/kainoa-ariola-bestowed-title-of-kumu-hula\/\">learn more about Ariola&#8217;s journey to becoming a kumu hula in <em><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo Stories<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Stacey <span aria-label=\"Kaaua\">Ka&#699;au&#699;a<\/span><\/strong> (<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> hula track graduate, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo Hawaiian studies major, business owner)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pele <span aria-label=\"Kaio\">Ka&#699;io<\/span><\/strong> (<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> hula track graduate, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo geography graduate, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Life Styles lecturer)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ryan McCormack<\/strong> (<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> First Year Experience coordinator)<\/li>\n<li><strong><span aria-label=\"Wahineaukai\">Wahine&#699;aukai Mercado<\/span><\/strong> (<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> hula track and nursing graduate)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gloria Pualani Muraki<\/strong> (retired bookkeeper)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Poliahu Naboa<\/strong> (<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> hula track graduate, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo psychology graduate, mother of two)<\/li>\n<li><strong><span aria-label=\"Noel\">No&#699;el<\/span> Tagab-Cruz<\/strong> (<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Life Styles Program K&#363;kulukuluua staff support)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kehani Tejada<\/strong> (<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> hula track graduate, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo history major, mother of one)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jacqueline Uluwehi Van Blarcom<\/strong> (<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> hula track graduate, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo biology major, <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> <span aria-label=\"Haakumalae\">Ha&#699;ak&#363;malae<\/span> assistant)<\/li>\n<li><strong>K&#257;healani Wilcox<\/strong> (<span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> hula track graduate, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo Hawaiian studies major)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;Tangar&#333; trained us to be wholly responsible for the passing on of familial knowledge, to steward traditions and practices, to be able to physically execute hula,&rdquo; cohort graduate Ariola explains.
