Conducted by the <a href=\"http:\/\/homeport.uscg.mil\/honolulu\">United States Coast Guard Sector Honolulu<\/a>, the two-day event focused on maritime industrial computer systems and networks, with a focus on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s container cargo distribution system. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Specifically for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, our maritime community is essential because that&#8217;s where our goods come in from. They come in via ship or barge, they&#8217;re transported around the state,&rdquo; said Capt. Shannon N. Gilreath, U.S. Coast Guard Sector Honolulu. <\/p>\n<p>The cybersecurity exercise follows the recent cyberattacks on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sony.com\">Sony Corporation<\/a> and other high profile companies, highlighting the vulnerability of even the most sophisticated network systems. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;In the same way that we prepare for hurricanes and tsunamis, we&#8217;re trying to prepare our maritime community from a potential cyberattack,&rdquo; Gilreath said. <\/p>\n<p>The exercise brought together information technology professionals from the Coast Guard and the community, as well as students, faculty and staff from the university&#8217;s information technology and computer science programs. <\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31159\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31159\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/cybersecurity.jpg\" alt=\"group of people around a computer\" width=\"400\" height=\"242\" class=\"size-full wp-image-31159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/cybersecurity.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/cybersecurity-260x157.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31159\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Information technology professionals from the Coast Guard and the community, as well as University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> students, faculty and staff participated in the Maritime Cybersecurity Exercise at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A <abbr>UH<\/abbr> team led by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Assistant Faculty Specialist <strong>Gerald Lau<\/strong> developed a hands-on exercise involving an interactive simulation of maritime industrial computer systems and networks&#8212;called a cyber range. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;So what we&#8217;re trying to do is to simulate a business environment for our Honolulu port. And what they&#8217;re doing is the teams are defending the different entities while they&#8217;re being attacked in the cyber area,&rdquo; said Lau. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> student <strong>Melvin Quemado<\/strong> is playing the role of a hacker. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As a hacker, once you know how people get in, you can use it to defend yourself. So what I&#8217;m learning now is what I can use to defend future systems&#8212;how hackers come in&#8212;so I know how to protect systems when I&#8217;m in the work force,&rdquo; said Quemado. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Working with the University of Hawai&#8217;i has been tremendous because they have this cyber range that we can use and they&#8217;ve made it available for our industry partners to really do this.
