The photo exhibit celebrates the 40th anniversary of the dance program at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo and the 22nd anniversary of the dance program at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr>. The exhibit will be displayed through February 12.<\/p>\n<p><em>Dance 40\/22<\/em> opened on January 12 with a performance by <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Professor <strong>Trina Nahm-Mijo<\/strong> with guest artists <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> <abbr>CC<\/abbr> Instructor <strong>Manaiakalani K&#257;lua<\/strong>; classical singer, Kim Nagy and celloist, Anna Callner. Other dance faculty performing were <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo Instructors <strong>Kea Kapahua<\/strong> and <strong>Annie Bunker<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<h2>History of dance at the campuses<\/h2>\n<p>In 1974 there was a burgeoning of the arts on <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island, which coincided with the beginning of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.volcanoartcenter.org\/\">Volcano Arts Center<\/a> and the creative inspiration that the Volcano environment provided for artists. The community thirst for dance training and expression spilled into the growing college campus community, and it was not unusual to find classes of 60 or more students packed into the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo Old Gym.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30883\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30883\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/uh-hilo-dance-art.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/uh-hilo-dance-art.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30883\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/uh-hilo-dance-art.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/uh-hilo-dance-art-260x173.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30883\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the photos from the exhibit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In honor of these milestones, <em>Dance 40\/22<\/em> presents iconic photos and newspaper articles from the 1970s and 1980s. The historical exhibit is a tribute to the founder of modern dance in the state of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> as well as founder of the dance program at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo, <strong>Earnest T. Morgan<\/strong> (1947&#8211;1992).
