  {"id":30535,"date":"2015-01-08T13:42:29","date_gmt":"2015-01-08T23:42:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=30535"},"modified":"2021-10-14T15:07:10","modified_gmt":"2021-10-15T01:07:10","slug":"microbial-oceanography-multimedia-project-gets-macro-exposure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2015\/01\/08\/microbial-oceanography-multimedia-project-gets-macro-exposure\/","title":{"rendered":"Microbial oceanography multimedia project gets macro exposure"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><p>A three minute video produced by a team from the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/hahana.soest.hawaii.edu\/hot\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Ocean Time-series<\/a> (<abbr>HOT<\/abbr>) program has been selected as one of 10 finalists in the <a href=\"http:\/\/ocean180.org\/\">Ocean 180 Video Challenge<\/a>, a video competition calling for video abstracts that not only summarize recently published research findings but also highlights their relevance and real-world implications. More than 50,000 6th to 8th graders will vote on a final winning video.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the study <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nrmicro\/journal\/v12\/n10\/pdf\/nrmicro3333.pdf\">&ldquo;Microbial oceanography and the Hawaiian Ocean Time-series programme&rdquo;<\/a> published in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nrmicro\/index.html\"><em>Nature Reviews Microbiology<\/em><\/a>, the team, consisting of <strong>David M. Karl<\/strong>, <strong>Matthew Church<\/strong>, <strong>Eric Grabowski<\/strong> and <strong>Drew Briscoe<\/strong> developed their video submission to focus on marine microorganisms and their influence on climate through the production and consumption of greenhouse gases, particularly in the North Pacific Ocean. The video also highlights the work of the <abbr>HOT<\/abbr> program that has been conducting research in the North Pacific since 1988.
