  {"id":29668,"date":"2014-12-02T09:02:39","date_gmt":"2014-12-02T19:02:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=29668"},"modified":"2021-10-19T09:49:04","modified_gmt":"2021-10-19T19:49:04","slug":"hauoli-mau-loa-fellowship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/12\/02\/hauoli-mau-loa-fellowship\/","title":{"rendered":"Budding <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> Hilo conservationists supported by Hau\u02bboli Mau Loa fellowship"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/hauolimauloa.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hauoli\">Hau&#699;oli<\/span> Mau Loa Foundation<\/a> has pledged a new commitment to support graduate students pursuing master&#8217;s degrees from the <a href=\"http:\/\/tcbes.uhh.hawaii.edu\/\">Tropical Conservation Biology and Environmental Science (<abbr>TCBES<\/abbr>) program<\/a> at the <a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a>. The pledge is for three students entering the program in 2015 and three students entering in 2016. Chaired by Professor <strong>Donald Price<\/strong>, the <abbr>TCBES<\/abbr> graduate program is a leader in conservation biology and environmental science training.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<span aria-label=\"Hauoli\">Hau&#699;oli<\/span> Mau Loa Foundation&#8217;s continued support is largely due to Dr. Price and his team&#8217;s great work with the <abbr>TCBES<\/abbr> students,&rdquo; says <strong>Jung Song<\/strong>, director of corporate and foundation relations at the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation. &ldquo;Many thanks for all the work that <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo and <abbr>TCBES<\/abbr> are doing to develop these students into future leaders in the conservation field.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<h2>Fellowship success story<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29679\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29679\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/roy-kylle.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"454\" class=\"size-full wp-image-29679\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/roy-kylle.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/roy-kylle-171x260.jpg 171w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29679\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kylle Roy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Kylle Roy<\/strong> is a current fellow in the program, pursuing her dreams to become a future <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> conservation and environmental leader. For her thesis project, she is using genetic and other ecological techniques to reveal the diet of the endemic Carbid beetle found in mountain forests across <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island. These beetles have disappeared on some islands due to human impact, and she hopes to pave the way for the use of this genus as bioindicators of forest health.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Words could not express how grateful I am for being a <span aria-label=\"Hauoli\">Hau&#699;oli<\/span> Mau Loa fellowship recipient,&rdquo; says Roy. &ldquo;Because of the program I was able to enroll as a master&#8217;s student and focus on my studies. This year has been incredible, as I have taken 17 credits, developed my thesis project, spent a lot of time in the field, attended two conferences and even found time to do a little volunteering.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Roy received her bachelor of science in biology with a minor in environmental science from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/\">Chapman University<\/a>. Her research work as an undergraduate caught the eye of Price, who researches the genetics of Hawaiian native species.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Her research this next year will be to fully develop the next generation and the stable isotope techniques to determine the insects in the diet of the beetles,&rdquo; says Price.<\/p>\n<p>Roy credits the <span aria-label=\"Hauoli\">Hau&#699;oli<\/span>  Mau Loa Fellowship Program for making her academic, research and outreach efforts possible.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;As a Hawaiian, born and raised in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, I know how grateful the land and the people are of the much needed financial conservation efforts,&rdquo; she says. &ldquo;This fellowship has really allowed me to explore my career options, providing countless opportunities for networking. I feel this fellowship has brought me much closer to my dream career in management for a profit or non-profit organization.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The other <span aria-label=\"Hauoli\">Hau&#699;oli<\/span> Mau Loa fellowship recipient are <strong>Karma Kissinger<\/strong>, <strong>Angela Beck<\/strong>, <strong>Christopher Yakym<\/strong>, <strong>Asa Aue<\/strong> and <strong>Timothy Sullivan<\/strong>.
