His dissertation research is focused on the community dynamics of foliar endophytic fungi&#8212;unique microorganisms that live inside the leaves of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s native plants.<\/p>\n<p>Cobian was selected from among 85 veterans nationwide who are currently supported by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsfgrfp.org\/\"><abbr>NSF<\/abbr> Graduate Research Fellowship Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>About the <abbr>NSF<\/abbr> Saluting Veterans in <abbr title=\"Science, Technology, Engineering and Math\">STEM<\/abbr> symposium, Cobian commented, &ldquo;It was a really diverse group of veterans, representing all different branches&#8212;Coast Guard, Air Force, Army, Marines and Navy&#8212;as well as all different types of research.&rdquo; Other veterans presented on topics from prosthesis development to micro-robotics to biofuels.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s important for people to recognize that there are veterans doing this type of work,&rdquo; Cobian added.<\/p>\n<p>A native of Northern California, Cobian served in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.marines.com\/home\">U.S. Marine Corps<\/a> from 2000 to 2004 as an infantry machine gunner, stationed at Twentynine Palms, California. He did two tours of combat duty in Iraq, once with 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Battalion 4<sup>th<\/sup> Marines, one of the first units into Baghdad. His second tour of duty was with 3<sup>rd<\/sup> Battalion 7<sup>th<\/sup> Marines in 2004, where his group occupied a forward observation base on the Iraq-Syria border.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Initially I never even planned on going to college,&rdquo; said Cobian, who worked in construction in Southern California after he finished his military service. The <abbr>GI<\/abbr> Bill made it possible for him to go back to school, first considering a degree in economics before switching to biology after a particularly positive classroom experience at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.butte.edu\/\">Butte Community College<\/a> in Oroville, California.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Âé¶¹´«Ã½News video<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/11\/10\/uh-honors-military-veterans-with-tuition-policy-change\/\">&ldquo;<abbr>UH<\/abbr> honors military veterans with tuition policy change&rdquo;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Cobian ultimately earned his undergraduate degree in genetics and plant biology at the <a href=\"http:\/\/berkeley.edu\/index.html\">University of California, Berkeley<\/a>, working in the Tom Bruns Lab under Nhu Nguyen.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29308\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29308\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/cobian-g2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"320\" class=\"size-full wp-image-29308\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/cobian-g2.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/cobian-g2-173x260.jpg 173w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29308\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cobian&#8217;s fungi research is supported by a <abbr>NSF<\/abbr> Graduate Research Fellowship.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Gerry has a deep knowledge and love of fungal natural history&#8212;really an infectious enthusiasm, which gives him an edge in his research. It also makes him a lot of fun to have around,&rdquo; said Cobian&#8217;s graduate advisor Amend.  &ldquo;He&#8217;s able to leverage that specialized knowledge to learn more about one of the most pervasive symbioses in nature.
