The book will be read by Nebraskans across the state in an effort to promote a culture of reading and discussion.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><strong>&ldquo;Death Zones and Darling Spies<\/strong> was the committee&#8217;s choice based on Keever&#8217;s compelling prose and ability to analyze complex historical\/political contexts to provide insight into America&#8217;s military and financial involvement in Vietnam,&rdquo; said Rebecca Faber, chair of the One Book One Nebraska selection committee. &ldquo;Her Nebraska background provided a tie to the response of Americans at home who were trying to comprehend a war like no other in which the United States had been involved&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/keever-book.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/keever-book.jpg\" alt=\"keever-book\" width=\"186\" height=\"273\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-16567\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/keever-book.jpg 186w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/keever-book-177x260.jpg 177w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 186px) 100vw, 186px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nebraskapress.unl.edu\/product\/Death-Zones-and-Darling-Spies,675658.aspx\"><em>Death Zones and Darling Spies<\/em><\/a>, the memoirs of American Vietnam War correspondent and <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> Professor Emerita <strong>Beverly Deepe Keever<\/strong>, has been selected as a finalist for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.onebookonenebraska.org\/\">One Book One Nebraska reading program<\/a>. One Book One Nebraska highlights books written by Nebraskan authors or have a Nebraska theme or setting. A native of Nebraska, Keever&#8217;s memoir is one of four nonfiction books and three novels chosen for 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Now in its eleventh year, One Book One Nebraska encourages Nebraskans from across the state to read and discuss the same book. A committee of the Nebraska Center for the Book will vote on the 2015 selection and will announce the winner at the Celebration of Nebraska Books on November 8.<\/p>\n<p>Keever&#8217;s memoirs chronicle her experiences covering the Vietnam War, providing today&#8217;s readers with a raw glimpse of life during one of the nation&#8217;s most brutal wars. <em>Death Zones and Darling Spies<\/em>, published in 2013, received widespread praise from reviewers across the nation. Keever, a pulitzer prize-nominated journalist, is honored by the selection.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;My memoirs might be more relevant now than at any time during the past half century as Vietnam&#8217;s shadow is cast more starkly over the United States&#8217; current so-called war on terror in the Middle East region,&rdquo; said Keever. &ldquo;The book might give readers a lens through which to understand today&#8217;s tragic events in the Middle East region.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/05\/07\/new-book-chronicles-work-of-female-vietnam-war-journalist\/\">&ldquo;New book chronicles work of female Vietnam War journalist&rdquo;<\/a> &#8211; May 7, 2013\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to her graduate degree from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.journalism.columbia.edu\/\">Columbia University Journalism School<\/a>, Keever was also awarded a master&#8217;s degree in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/lis\/\">library studies<\/a> from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa.
