An East Coast native, this visible affliction in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> inspired Shin to make a change. In 2012 in conjunction with the <a href=\"http:\/\/oahu.surfrider.org\/\">Surfrider Foundation<\/a>, Shin gathered 1,000 signatures on a petition to ban styrofoam eating products at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa, an effort that eventually resulted in a campus-wide ban of single-use foam packaging at any of the campus&#8217; several dining locations.<\/p>\n<p>A steadfast advocate for sustainability and environmental stewardship, Shin was honored with a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.broweryouthawards.org\/winner\/doorae-shin\/\">2014 Brower Youth Award<\/a> for her commitment to <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s environmental movement. The award recognizes youth leaders from around the nation who have made significant strides towards environmental preservation, conservation and restoration.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;With thousands of amazing young leaders around North America working on incredible environmental projects, I feel so blessed and honored to be recognized by such an inspiring organization,&rdquo; said Shin of receiving the award. &ldquo;I hope that the campus community and especially students feel empowered in their ability to move our campuses towards increased environmental stewardship.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Efforts such as Shin&#8217;s move <abbr>UH<\/abbr> towards a more sustainable university model in line with environmental movements that are taking place around the world. &ldquo;The ban on single-use foam products is incredible, but there is no single campaign in which the environmental movement can claim victory and stop there,&rdquo; she said. &ldquo;I will continue to organize the community and advocate for the changes we need if we want to sustain ourselves and the planet that sustains us.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Shin is currently working as student sustainability coordinator, a role that calls for multi-campus collaboration in campaigning for and eventually implementing environmentally and socially friendly practices. <a href=\"http:\/\/divestuh.org\/\">Divest <abbr>UH<\/abbr><\/a> is one such campaign that aims to divest the university from fossil fuels and redirect the university&#8217;s investments away from oil and gas stock.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Everyone has the power and the responsibility to be an activist whether it is through personal action or community collaboration,&rdquo; said Shin. &ldquo;With <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> being one of the most vulnerable places for the impacts of climate change, it is time for us to all choose to be a part of the solution.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8212;By <span aria-label=\"Kapiolani\">Kapi&#699;olani<\/span> Ching<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa student Doorae Shin receives Brower Youth Award for significant efforts to improve campus sustainability.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[29],"tags":[660,73,9,56],"class_list":["post-28827","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-people","tag-student-recognition","tag-sustainability","tag-uh-manoa","tag-video-2","entry","has-media"],"aioseo_notices":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/28827","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/16"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=28827"}],"version-history":[{"count":23,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/28827\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":150257,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/28827\/revisions\/150257"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=28827"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=28827"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=28827"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
