  {"id":2881,"date":"2011-12-13T16:02:17","date_gmt":"2011-12-14T02:02:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=2881"},"modified":"2021-05-25T14:38:15","modified_gmt":"2021-05-26T00:38:15","slug":"maui-wave-buoy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2011\/12\/13\/maui-wave-buoy\/","title":{"rendered":"New wave buoy deployed in Maui"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_2902\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2902\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/buoy.jpg\" alt=\"yellow buoy\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2902\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/buoy.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/buoy-173x260.jpg 173w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2902\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wave buoy in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> waters<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On December 3, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pacioos.org\">Pacific Islands Ocean Observing System<\/a> deployed a new Datawell Mark <abbr>II<\/abbr> Waverider Buoy in 700 feet of Maui&#8217;s coastal waters just north of Kahului. <\/p>\n<p>This buoy will help to inform safe transit entering and exiting Kahului Harbor, provide real-time data to recreational ocean users and provide critical information for coastal hazard and low-lying inundation forecasts for north facing shores.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark Merrifield<\/strong>, University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa professor of oceanography and <abbr>PacIOOS<\/abbr> lead for wave and water level measurements, and his team organized the buoy deployment.<\/p>\n<p>According to <abbr>PacIOOS<\/abbr> Director <strong>Chris Ostrander<\/strong>, this location was chosen in response to multiple stakeholder requests and aims &ldquo;primarily to provide information to recreational and commercial mariners who use Kahului harbor and transit the waters north of Maui.
