{"id":28685,"date":"2014-10-21T11:00:42","date_gmt":"2014-10-21T21:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=28685"},"modified":"2021-10-22T14:00:15","modified_gmt":"2021-10-23T00:00:15","slug":"14-2-million-native-hawaiian-student-services-grant-awarded-to-uh-west-oahu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/10\/21\/14-2-million-native-hawaiian-student-services-grant-awarded-to-uh-west-oahu\/","title":{"rendered":"$14.2 million Native Hawaiian student services grant awarded to <abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> West O\u02bbahu"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_16502\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16502\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/west-oahu-campus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/west-oahu-campus.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/west-oahu-campus.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/west-oahu-campus-260x145.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16502\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">University of Hawaii\u2013West Oahu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8212;West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/a> was awarded a total of $14.2 million in Title <abbr title=\"three\">III<\/abbr> grant funding from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ed.gov\/\">U.S. Department of Education<\/a> for the construction of Native Hawaiian health and wellness facilities and the further development of Native Hawaiian student support services.<\/p>\n<p>The university will receive $10 million for the <abbr>PIKO<\/abbr> Renovation Project&#8212;construction of health and wellness facilities and programs that integrate Native Hawaiian values of well-being.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Health and wellness programs<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A Wellness Center that addresses holistic health and wellness programming<\/li>\n<li>A Nursing Simulation Lab for state-of-the-art training in health-related concentrations with the goal of improving Native Hawaiian health equity<\/li>\n<li>A Cultural and Performing Arts and Education Amphitheater as part of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Library for student and campus events and activities<\/li>\n<li>Community engagement and service-learning support focused on the health and well-being of the campus and community<\/li>\n<li>Academic support to increase student retention and success in health sciences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> will receive $4.2 million over a five-year period for the development of a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhwo.hawaii.edu\/admissions\/first-year-experience\/pueo-leadership-program\/\">Pueo Scholars Program<\/a>, which will include comprehensive student support services aimed at increasing the retention and graduation rates of the university&#8217;s Native Hawaiian students. The <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Pueo Scholars Program is a continuum of services and support starting from pre-college to graduation.<\/p>\n<p><strong><abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Pueo Scholars Program<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dual enrollment\/Early Admit courses for <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> local area high school students<\/li>\n<li>Implementation of the <span aria-label=\"Onipaa\">&#699;Onipa&#699;a<\/span> (steadfast) three-part summer program designed to bolster Native Hawaiian student fall enrollment after high school graduation that includes a one-credit SD 100 university experience college preparatory course, six weeks of paid summer employment followed by a one-credit SD 101 Summer Bridge course<\/li>\n<li>A dedicated Pueo Scholar advisor who assists new Native Hawaiian and other incoming freshmen and first-year transfer students to ease the adjustment to <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> college life<\/li>\n<li>Additional tutors for <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> subjects who are academically capable and knowledgeable about Native Hawaiian history, culture and learning styles<\/li>\n<li>Peer mentoring for students during the first year at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Continuation of supplemental instruction for general education courses aimed at ensuring successful pass rates<\/li>\n<li>Increased student leadership opportunities including a three-credit upper division leadership course, workshops, seminars and projects<\/li>\n<li>Service learning opportunities included in coursework to enhance course material and promote civic engagement<\/li>\n<li>An educational pathway for students pursuing education degrees providing related services, technology materials and supplies that assist in their persistence to graduation and becoming licensed teachers<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;As a University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> four-year campus with a high percentage of Native Hawaiian students, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> will offer enhanced services specifically geared for Native Hawaiian student success, with this generous grant funding,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> West <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> Chancellor <strong>Rockne Freitas<\/strong>. &ldquo;We are truly grateful for this opportunity to better serve all of our students through new health and wellness facilities and support programs.
