{"id":28121,"date":"2014-10-06T14:58:07","date_gmt":"2014-10-07T00:58:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=28121"},"modified":"2021-10-25T14:05:37","modified_gmt":"2021-10-26T00:05:37","slug":"windward-hoolaulea-is-music-to-the-ears-of-local-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/10\/06\/windward-hoolaulea-is-music-to-the-ears-of-local-community\/","title":{"rendered":"Windward <span aria-label=\"Hoolaulea\">Ho\u02bbolaule\u02bba<\/span> is music to the ears of local community"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0tRJhuKxb80\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A fall tradition on the windward side of <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, courtesy of <a href=\"http:\/\/windward.hawaii.edu\">Windward Community College<\/a> and the <span aria-label=\"Kaneohe\">K\u0101ne&#699;ohe<\/span> Business Group, the Windward <span aria-label=\"Hoolaulea\">Ho&#699;olaule&#699;a<\/span> attracts thousands each year.<\/p>\n<p>The family-friendly event features top island entertainment and supports the college&#8217;s many programs and raises money for student scholarships.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28144\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28144\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/wcc-hoolaulea-kids.jpg\" alt=\"kids at college club display\" width=\"400\" height=\"251\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/wcc-hoolaulea-kids.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/wcc-hoolaulea-kids-260x163.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28144\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Learning about chemistry in a fun, explosive way.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;There&#8217;ll be close to 30 Windward Community College students in the future who are going to school thanks to this event,&rdquo; says Chancellor Douglas Dykstra of scholarships.<\/p>\n<p>The annual event that started in 2000, honors the tradition of the Hawaiian culture on the windward side with demonstrations and activities, and a celebration of Hawaiian music and hula.<\/p>\n<p>The Windward <span aria-label=\"Hoolaulea\">Ho&#699;olaule&#699;a<\/span> is also an opportunity for Windward students, faculty and staff to educate the community about the college and its wide variety of programs.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28143\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28143\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/wcc-hoolaulea-band.jpg\" alt=\"musicians on stage\" width=\"300\" height=\"287\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28143\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/wcc-hoolaulea-band.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/wcc-hoolaulea-band-260x248.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28143\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Live music was a highlight of the 14th Annual Windward <span aria-label=\"Hoolaulea\">Ho&#699;olaule&#699;a<\/span>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;We are the chemistry club,&rdquo; explains student Sean Osurman. &ldquo;We are doing the mentos [and] coke geyser and the ice cream. What we are trying to do is expose ourselves a little bit more and make chemistry a little bit more present in our society.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Along with student booths and demonstrations, there&#8217;s always an exhibit showcasing student art work, Imaginarium shows, arts and crafts, family friendly rides and jumpers, a silent auction and a great selection of food.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It is absolutely wonderful. I love it,&rdquo; says attendee Pamela Scott. &ldquo;Absolutely. The best way to spend a Saturday.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Ernie Vidinha agrees: &ldquo;Awesome. Fabulous. <span aria-label=\"Maikai\">Maika&#699;i<\/span>.
