The film will be premiering at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hiff.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> International Film Festival<\/a> on November 6 at the Dole Cannery Theatres in Honolulu with additional showings on November 9 at <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Kai Koko Marina Theatres and November 15 at Hilo Palace Theater (<a href=\"http:\/\/program.hiff.org\/films\/detail\/39ike_knowledge_is_everywhere_2014\">see schedule and ticket information<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>While the film will highlight the community-driven programs of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wcchc.com\/Learning\/Waianae-Health-Academy\"><span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> Health Academy<\/a>, a program of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wcchc.com\/\"><span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> Coast Comprehensive Health Center<\/a> on <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>, the premise of one segment within the documentary will revolve around two <a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/depts\/nursing\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo nursing<\/a> students, Theresa-Regina Rivera and Mark Jones, who are earning their degrees via distance learning while remaining in their community of <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;These two stepped up and opened up to share their individual story of being a non-traditional adult student who has struggled within many aspects of their personal life within a community impacted by poverty,&rdquo; says Amy Asam, education director of the health center. &ldquo;But each were able to eventually navigate through and find success again via the <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> Health Academy. They have finally found academic success at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo via our academic-community partnership and both are well on their way to professional success in nursing as well.&ldquo;<\/p>\n<h2>More about Theresa-Regina Rivera and Mark Jones<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28107\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28107\" style=\"width: 364px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/hilo-nursing.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"364\" height=\"263\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28107\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/hilo-nursing.jpg 364w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/hilo-nursing-260x187.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 364px) 100vw, 364px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28107\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo nursing students Mark Jones and Theresa-Regina Rivera<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Asam describes Rivera as a wife, mother, student and a role model. She is the truest example of determination in the face of adversity. Her positive attitude and mindset prevail, even though her community of <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> continues to face adverse social detriments that keep many students from excelling in post-secondary pursuits. Following the completion of her bachelor degree in nursing, Rivera will take the state exam to become a licensed registered nurse.<\/p>\n<p>Jones, who before pursuing a degree in nursing was an intermediate school teacher in <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span>, is now on the other side of the classroom as he works toward completing his senior year in the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Hilo School of Nursing program. He also is an instructor with the <span aria-label=\"Waianae\">Wai&#699;anae<\/span> Health Academy early admissions college program for teens enrolled in a college health course during their junior and senior years of high school.
