She draws comparisons to Joan Baez and the Lebanese diva Fairouz. Her lyrical style is infused with powerful rock, oriental and trip-hop influences.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Luis Valdez<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.outreach.hawaii.edu\/community\/programs\/2014\/EVENT-EV0013500T.asp\">Free public lecture<\/a>: Thursday, October 16, 6:30 p.m. at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Orvis Auditorium<br \/>\nLuis Valdez is a noted playwright, director and filmmaker and founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elteatrocampesino.com\/\">El Teatro Campesino<\/a>. He is director of <em>Zoot Suite<\/em> and <em>La Bamba<\/em>. <em>Presented in association with <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Colleges of Arts and Sciences, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/llea\/\">Department of Languages and Literatures of Europe and the Americas<\/a>.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Indian Ink Theatre Company: The Guru of Chai<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.outreach.hawaii.edu\/community\/programs\/2014\/EVENT-EV0013491T.asp\">Performance<\/a>: Monday, October 20 at 7:30 p.m. at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Orvis Auditorium<br \/>\nIndian Ink Theatre Company, one of New Zealand&#8217;s most successful theatre companies, presents this outrageously funny and heartbreakingly beautiful romantic thriller. Prepare to be enlightened as the contradictions of modern India with its iPhones and ancient gods come alive in this story of a poor chaiwallah (tea seller).
