For the next mission, starting October 15, the participants will be isolated in their dome habitat for eight months. This mission is twice as long as any previously completed at the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> site, and second only to Russia&#8217;s Mars500 experiment in total duration.<\/p>\n<p>Also, for the first time, <abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr> will have a female commander. In <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> history, only two women have every commanded the spaceship: astronauts Eileen Collins in July 1999 and Pamela Melroy in November 2007.<\/p>\n<p>For true space flight, the commander role requires previous astronaut experience as well as at least 1,000 hours experience piloting a jet aircraft. For <abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr>, Commander <strong>Martha Lenio<\/strong> was selected based on feedback from fellow crew members and from instructors of the National Outdoor Leadership Skills course that both <abbr>NASA<\/abbr> and <abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr> require of their teams in training.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27903\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27903\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lenio-m.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"273\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27903\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lenio-m.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/lenio-m-190x260.jpg 190w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27903\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Martha Lenio will be the first female commander of a HI-SEAS mission.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lenio is a mechanical engineer who earned her PhD in photovoltaic engineering from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unsw.edu.au\">University of New South Wales<\/a> (Sydney, Australia) in 2013. She has worked in sustainable building and the photovoltaics industry, and is currently starting up her own renewable energy consulting firm. Lenio was born and raised in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.<\/p>\n<p>The six <abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr> crew members are part of the human performance study funded by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/\"><abbr>NASA<\/abbr><\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> researchers and their collaborators will be studying the group&#8217;s cohesion over time, gathering data on a wide range of cognitive, social and emotional factors that may impact team performance.<\/p>\n<p>During their eight months inside the habitat, the crew will be continuously monitored using surveillance cameras, body movement trackers, electronic surveys, and other methods.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The <abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr> site presents a remarkably high-fidelity environment for this type of long-duration space study,&rdquo; said <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa Associate Professor <strong>Kim Binsted<\/strong>, the principle investigator of the study. &ldquo;Looking out the single porthole window, all you can see are lava fields and Maunakea in the distance. Once the door is closed, the faux airlock sealed, the silence and physical separation contribute to the &lsquo;long way from home&rsquo; experience from our crew members.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>2014&#8211;2015 <abbr>HI-SEAS<\/abbr> crew members<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Neil Scheibelhut<\/strong>, a graduate of the <a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> who earned his bachelor&#8217;s degree in cell and molecular biology. Scheibelhut is a combat veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom <abbr title=\"three\">III<\/abbr> and is currently working as a microbiologist in Los Angeles. He was born in Mishawaka, <abbr>IN<\/abbr>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jocelyn Dunn<\/strong>, a PhD candidate at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.purdue.edu\/\">Purdue University<\/a> in the School of Industrial Engineering. Her dissertation is focused on real-time data analytics for decision support and system improvement. Dunn grew up in Sebring, <abbr>FL<\/abbr>. She has a bachelor&#8217;s degree in aerospace engineering from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.erau.edu\/\">Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University<\/a> and a master&#8217;s degree from the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Allen Mirkadyrov<\/strong>, an aerospace engineer in the flight safety division at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers\/wallops\/home\/\"><abbr>NASA<\/abbr>&#8217;s Wallops Flight Facility<\/a>, <abbr>VA<\/abbr>. His primary focus is on orbital and sub-orbital missions at various launch ranges around the world. Previously, Mirkadyrov served 10 years in the U.S. Air Force, both in an enlisted role and as an officer. Mirkadyrov was born in Baku, Azerbaijan, <abbr>USSR<\/abbr>, and now lives in Phoenix, <abbr>AZ<\/abbr>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sophie Milam<\/strong>, a graduate of the <a href=\"http:\/\/hilo.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo<\/a> earned her degree in physics and astronomy and is now a graduate student at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uidaho.edu\/\">University of Idaho<\/a>. Milam grew up in San Antonia, <abbr>TX<\/abbr>, and is currently working with the Intelligent Robotics Group at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers\/ames\/home\/\"><abbr>NASA<\/abbr> Ames Research Center<\/a> in Montain View, <abbr>CA<\/abbr>. She plans for a career in <abbr>STEM<\/abbr> outreach.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Zak Wilson<\/strong>, the only crew member with previous experience on a space analog study. Wilson participated as a crew engineer for a two-week mission at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah. He has a master&#8217;s degree in composite materials from <a href=\"http:\/\/www3.imperial.ac.uk\/\">Imperial College London<\/a> and previously worked as a stress analyst with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ga-asi.com\/\">General Atomics Aeronautical Systems&#8217;<\/a> Airframe Integrity Group.
