William Haning<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Medical Association<\/a> has selected Psychiatrist William Haning<\/strong> as the 2014 Physician of the Year. The award recognizes physicians who go above and beyond the call of the medical profession in addressing important health care issues that affect our local communities.<\/p>\n

Haning is a teacher, researcher and community leader in the field of addiction medicine, serving both the State of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> and the U.S.<\/abbr> military.<\/p>\n

Haning is a tenured professor of psychiatry at the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a>. An alumnus of the medical school’s first four-year class in 1975, he is the president of the JABSOM<\/abbr> Alumni Association<\/a> and has helped train medical students and MD<\/abbr> residents at JABSOM<\/abbr> under six deans.<\/p>\n

He holds numerous academic awards including the American Psychiatry Association’s Nancy C.A.<\/abbr> Roeske Certificate<\/a>, the John A. Burns School of Medicine’s John M. Hardman Award for Mentorships and the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Regents’ Medal.<\/p>\n

A former head of graduate medical education, Haning is currently the associate chair for education and director of the Core Psychiatric Residency Training Program. He is also principle investigator and co-director of the Pacific Addiction Research Center, where he has specialized in studying methamphetamine use disorders. He was the founding medical director of Hina Mauka<\/a>, a residential treatment facility focused on addictive disorders complicated by other illnesses, and past director of addiction psychiatry at the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> State Hospital. Most recently, he has helped the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Judiciary launch a special court for driving while intoxicated cases.<\/p>\n

Haning has served the U.S.<\/abbr> armed services for 37 years, including providing oversight of medical care for Marine Corps Forces Pacific<\/a> at the outset of the 2003 Iraq War. He received the Legion of Merit for other services to the U.S.<\/abbr> Marine Corps as force surgeon.<\/p>\n

Haning will receive the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Medical Association award at the 2014 Ola Pono Ike Medical Gala on October 4, 2014, 5:30 p.m. at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort.<\/p>\n
