{"id":27538,"date":"2014-09-15T09:45:08","date_gmt":"2014-09-15T19:45:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=27538"},"modified":"2026-08-10T13:00:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T23:00:29","slug":"21st-century-classroom-design-cultivates-collaboration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/09\/15\/21st-century-classroom-design-cultivates-collaboration\/","title":{"rendered":"21st century classroom design cultivates collaboration"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=&#8221;&#8221;]<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Youtube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/R2U83SqssOY\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>There is a new innovation zone in Sakamaki Hall on the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Hawai\u02bbi<\/span> at M\u0101noa<\/a> campus that includes three new classroom spaces\u2014and these are not your mom and dad\u2019s college classrooms.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-27559\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/sakamaki-classroom.jpg\" alt=\"students in front of a white board\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/sakamaki-classroom.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/sakamaki-classroom-260x146.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/>They feature easy-to-move, comfortable, flexible furniture that allows for multiple seating and standing options; walls and walls of white boards and sliding plexiglass surfaces to write on; the latest technologies for content display and sharing; bright rooms filled with natural light, ample outlets and a lot of space to move around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really a different kind of space in which you are invited to participate, you\u2019re invited to be active and the old classroom has really been turned inside out,\u201d said <strong>Reed Dasenbrock<\/strong>, the vice chancellor of academic affairs at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to the faculty driven designs, the active teacher, passive student model\u2014a professor lecturing to students seated in rows of fixed seats\u2014is gone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe design of this classroom, which is so different, is intended to model what learning really is like,\u201d added Dasenbrock. \u201cLearning does not take place by sitting and listening to the professor but by the professor designing an environment in which students have to do things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rod Labrador<\/strong>, an ethnic studies professor at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa, agrees. \u201cIt forces me to be a little more creative in what I am doing,\u201d explains Labrador. \u201cIt forces me to come up with activities that utilize the space. It really forces me to\u2014to be all clich\u00e9d\u2014think outside of the box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The classrooms are designed to easily incorporate group work and collaboration that can be quickly shared and discussed with the entire class.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking together and using it in class would lead to more of their own grasping and ownership of the material,\u201d said <strong>Kaliko Baker<\/strong>, a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa Hawaiian language instructor.<\/p>\n<p>Students say the new environment fosters better learning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPersonally, I feel like I learn more from discussion and other students\u2019 perspectives,\u201d said student <strong>\u0100nuenue Purcell<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI learn better talking through things, which this space gives that opportunity,\u201d added fellow student <strong>Ruben Campos<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why the new classroom spaces were designed with comfort and agility in mind: to be more like a living room or caf\u00e9 instead of a classroom from the 1960s.<\/p>\n<div style=\"float: right; margin: 0 0 15px 15px;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"New classroom and teaching technique tested at Â鶹´«Ã½Manoa\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9VjOO6DRq_s\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe> <strong>Related <abbr>UH<\/abbr> News video<\/strong>: <em>New classroom and teaching<br \/>\ntechnique tested at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa<\/em>, September 24, 2012<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe chairs, you can actually sit on the back of the chair,\u201d said Campos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone is a little bit more comfortable and relaxed,\u201d said Purcell.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe circular chairs are nice for getting different people to actually speak up in class,\u201d said Campos.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re sitting on the ground, others are standing up,\u201d said Labrador. \u201cIt allows them a certain amount of freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s all part of <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa\u2019s movement towards agility in education to create more engaged opportunities to teach and learn. It also advances the larger <abbr>UH<\/abbr> System initiative to develop 21st century facilities across the 10
