The award recognizes the most creative use of underutilized <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> grown non-native wood species. <span aria-label=\"Tuikolongahau\">Tu&#699;ikolongahau<\/span> is a graduate student at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arch.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Architecture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mohuhano &ldquo;Mo&rdquo; <span aria-label=\"Tuikolongahau\">Tu&#699;ikolongahau<\/span> was awarded the 2014 <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Woodshow&#8217;s Spirit of the Show Award for a chair he made of Hawaiian ash wood. The award recognizes the most creative use of underutilized <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> grown non-native wood species. <span aria-label=\"Tuikolongahau\">Tu&#699;ikolongahau<\/span> is a graduate student at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arch.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Architecture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Tuikolongahau\">Tu&#699;ikolongahau<\/span> produced the piece, titled &ldquo;Rise Chair,&rdquo; in an advanced furniture design and fabrication class taught by Assistant Professor <strong>Hongtao Zhou<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Mo&#8217;s design took advantage of the straight ash wood fiber to create a long spiral using a free-form laminating technique, combining both sculpture and structure elements to create an architecturally beautiful as well as functional chair,&rdquo; said Zhou.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was challenging to balance the elements&#8212;structure, seating, backrest&#8212;to achieve a cohesive look that was functional at the same time,&rdquo; said <span aria-label=\"Tuikolongahau\">Tu&#699;ikolongahau<\/span>, who spent two months working on &ldquo;Rising Chair.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><span aria-label=\"Tuikolongahau\">Tu&#699;ikolongahau<\/span> is a graduate of Tonga High School and earned his undergraduate degree in architecture from <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa School of Architecture in 2012.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27352\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27352\" style=\"width: 233px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/rise-chair.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"233\" height=\"383\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27352\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/rise-chair.jpg 233w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/rise-chair-158x260.jpg 158w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 233px) 100vw, 233px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27352\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&ldquo;Rise Chair,&rdquo; won the 2014 <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Woodshow Spirit of the Show Award.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Where to see the winning chair<\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<p>Sponsored by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaiiforest.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Forest Industry Association<\/a>, the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Woodshow is being held at the <a href=\"http:\/\/honolulumuseum.org\/\">Honolulu Museum of Art School<\/a> at Linekona until  September 14. The show is free and open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>There were more than 80 entries from <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, California and Japan in the 2014 <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Woodshow.
