Danny Cheng, a 2009 graduate of the John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (JABSOM<\/abbr>), is among the physicians who appear in the critically acclaimed film, Code Black<\/em><\/a>, which will be shown September 5–12 at the Kahala Theatres. Cheng works in the emergency department at The Queen’s Medical Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Acting as the chief of Los Angeles County and the University of Southern California (LAC+USC<\/abbr>) Emergency Medicine residency, Dr. Cheng exemplifies exactly what JABSOM<\/abbr> instills in us during our training,” said Los Angeles emergency room third-year resident Darragh O’Carroll, a 2012 JABSOM<\/abbr> graduate. “Being a third-year resident at LAC+USC<\/abbr>, I am extremely proud of this movie, and extremely proud of the values and knowledge that JABSOM<\/abbr> has given every alumnus of this terrific medical school.”<\/p>\n

Code Black<\/em> follows a dedicated team of charismatic, young doctors-in-training as they wrestle openly with both their ideals and with the realities of saving lives in a complex and overburdened healthcare system.<\/p>\n

Their training ground and source of inspiration is “C-Booth,” Los Angeles County Hospital’s legendary trauma bay, where “more people have died and more people have been saved than any other square footage in the United States.”<\/p>\n

Code Black<\/em> offers a tense, doctor’s-eye view into America’s only 24\/7 safety net.<\/p>\n

The film has received the Los Angeles and The Hamptom’s Film Festival’s best documentary award, and the Denver Starz and the Aspen FilmFest’s audience award.<\/p>\n
