The focus is on investing in innovative ideas and providing a launch pad for commercialization.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Traditionally, we worked hard to license our technology and what we are doing now is, this is a new approach,&rdquo; explained <abbr>UH<\/abbr> President David Lassner. &ldquo;We&#8217;re actually going to take the great ideas from our students and faculty and help them determine whether or not we can bring these to market, create new businesses.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Is a program that takes technologies that they have been produced and created within the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>; whether this is by our students, our alumni, our faculty, our researchers; and try to accelerate it,&rdquo; added Vassilis L. Syrmos, the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Vice President for Research and Innovation. His office is in charge of the program.<\/p>\n<p>Students, faculty and alumni accepted to <abbr>XLR8UH<\/abbr> must successfully complete an entrepreneurial, commercialization program conducted in conjunction with <abbr>PACE<\/abbr>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/pace.shidler.hawaii.edu\/\">Pacific Asian Center for Entrepreneurship<\/a>, part of the <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/shidler.hawaii.edu\/\">Shidler College of Business<\/a>. <abbr>PACE<\/abbr> runs the popular <a href=\"http:\/\/pace.shidler.hawaii.edu\/bpc\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> business plan competition<\/a> and provides the necessary education, guidance and resources to empower <abbr>UH<\/abbr> entrepreneurs with the skills, connections and expertise needed for startup success.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/xlr8.jpg\" alt=\"close up of engineer working on circuit board\" width=\"425\" height=\"266\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-27327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/xlr8.jpg 425w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/xlr8-260x162.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We give them some additional funding, we help them to produce a business plan, development, product development and try to find funding,&rdquo; said Syrmos.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Perhaps gaining money through one of our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhfoundation.org\/\"><abbr>UH<\/abbr> Foundation<\/a> partnerships or state partnerships, as we move along the way to identifying private capital that can turn some of these ideas into businesses,&rdquo; said Lassner.<\/p>\n<p>Among the first seven <abbr>XLR8UH<\/abbr> groups or cohorts is the company Diagenetix Inc., developing hand held instruments for agriculture to enable detection of everything from plant disease to the sex of a papaya.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;I think to have a business environment and have the university facilitate, having the mentorship and the business community back up these ventures, is really important in order to really develop these commercial products,&rdquo; said Daniel Jenkins an <abbr>XLR8UH<\/abbr> cohort member from Diagenetix and <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa associate professor in molecular biosciences and bioengineering.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>XLR8UH<\/abbr> is a major component of one of university&#8217;s key strategic directions, the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Innovation Initiative, a partnership with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hibusinessroundtable.org\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Business Roundtable<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;That&#8217;s the work of the university to diversify <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s economy and create more great jobs here, in partnership with the business community, to really create a third leg of the economy alongside tourism and military spending,&rdquo;
