{"id":26758,"date":"2014-08-18T15:03:36","date_gmt":"2014-08-19T01:03:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=26758"},"modified":"2021-10-28T11:49:24","modified_gmt":"2021-10-28T21:49:24","slug":"cyber-canoe-to-explore-worlds-of-data-in-3-d","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/08\/18\/cyber-canoe-to-explore-worlds-of-data-in-3-d\/","title":{"rendered":"Cyber-CANOE to explore worlds of data in 3-D"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"676\" height=\"380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lV1AkWy_MQs\" title=\"Youtube video player\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> is now a leader in data visualization.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Which is basically techniques for turning data, into imagery, to help people make sense of these large amounts of data,&rdquo; said <strong>Jason Leigh<\/strong>, a <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ics.hawaii.edu\/\">computer science<\/a> professor.<\/p>\n<p><abbr>UH<\/abbr>&#8217;s new prominence in the futuristic field is thanks to the successful recruitment of Leigh, the university&#8217;s second <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/innovation\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Innovation Initiative<\/a> hire.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Â鶹´«Ã½news story<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/10\/10\/visualization-expert-jason-leigh-is-key-new-innovation-initiative-hire\/\">&ldquo;Visualization expert Jason Leigh is key new <abbr>UH<\/abbr> Innovation Initiative hire&rdquo;<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Leigh came from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uic.edu\/uic\/\">University of Illinois at Chicago<\/a> where he was an internationally recognized leader in data visualization. He helped develop Cave Automatic Virtual Enviromment (<abbr>CAVE<\/abbr>) and <abbr>CAVE<\/abbr> 2: a 2-D and 3-D, 320-degree panoramic, virtual reality environment made up of 72 flat screen <abbr>LCD<\/abbr> panels, 20 Ambisonic speakers and 36 high-speed computers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26791\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26791\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/leigh-j.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"218\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26791\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/leigh-j.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/leigh-j-260x141.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26791\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jason Leigh<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;You step into it and it is projected with three-dimensional computer graphics and objects appear, or data appears, as if they were real, floating in front of you,&rdquo; said Leigh. &ldquo;So the computer helps you make those picture, make those connections between all of the different pieces of data that you are trying to fuse.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p><abbr>CAVE<\/abbr> 2 is being used in medical research, chemistry, automobile design, to name just a few. Leigh has secured funding to build a smaller prototype of the next generation of the technology at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa. It will be called the Cyber-CANOE.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It stands for collaborative, analytics, navigation and observation environment,&rdquo; said Leigh, adding that <abbr>UH<\/abbr> is perfect for the Cyber-CANOE because of its world renowned programs like oceanography and astronomy. For example, data visualization can be used to quickly and better analyze massive amounts of data being collected by <abbr>UH<\/abbr> oceanographers.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;They can literally swim in this virtual ocean and observe their data as it is being collected,&rdquo; said Leigh. &ldquo;I mean, that is one of the voids on this campus, right?
