  {"id":26458,"date":"2014-07-29T14:58:13","date_gmt":"2014-07-30T00:58:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=26458"},"modified":"2021-10-28T14:04:24","modified_gmt":"2021-10-29T00:04:24","slug":"kilauea-exerted-an-influence-on-tropical-storm-flossie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/07\/29\/kilauea-exerted-an-influence-on-tropical-storm-flossie\/","title":{"rendered":"K\u012blauea exerted an influence on Tropical Storm Flossie"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><figure id=\"attachment_26460\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26460\" style=\"width: 293px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/flossie.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/flossie.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"293\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-26553\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/flossie.jpg 293w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/flossie-253x260.jpg 253w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26460\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Model predictions show K\u012blauea emissions entrained in Flossie (Pattantyus and Businger, 2014)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A recent study from the atmospheric scientists at the <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/\">University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa<\/a> revealed that although they are microscopic, gasses and particles from K&#299;lauea volcano exerted an influence on Tropical Storm Flossie&#8212;affecting the formation of thunderstorms and lightning in the sizable storm.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2013, as Flossie approached the Hawaiian Islands, satellites steadily monitored lightning, rainfall, cloud cover, temperature and winds, In addition, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa graduate assistant Andre Pattantyus and Atmospheric Science Professor <strong>Steven Businger<\/strong> dutifully maintained their vog model&#8212;a forecasting tool Businger has operated since 2010 to provide guidance on the location of the vog plume and the concentrations of sulfur dioxide (SO<sub>2<\/sub>) and sulfate aerosol for Hawaiian Island communities.<\/p>\n<p>In assessing the vog model Businger, co-author of the study, noted &ldquo;We noticed the curious spiral pattern of vog being entrained into Hurricane Flossie and decided to dig deeper by looking at satellite and lightning data sets.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Businger and lead author Pattantyus found that prior to Flossie&#8217;s passage over the island of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, the observation network detected no lightning in the storm. Though one hour later, vigorous lightning flashed in the vicinity of the Island of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> as Flossie approached. Further, as volcanic emissions were wrapped into this moist environment, sulfate aerosols promoted the formation of a greater number of smaller than normal cloud droplets, which favored charge separation in the upper cloud region and the occurrence of lightning.<\/p>\n<p>Sulfate aerosols have previously been identified as a principle component of cloud condensation nuclei, a necessary ingredient for forming raindrops. &ldquo;This is the first interaction between an active, vigorously degassing volcano and a tropical cyclone captured by a vog model run over the Hawaiian Islands&#8212;providing a unique opportunity to analyze the influence of robust volcanic emissions entrained into a tropical storm system,&rdquo; said Businger.<\/p>\n<p>Taken together, the observations and the vog model highlight an intimate interaction between Tropical Storm Flossie and K&#299;lauea&#8217;s vog plume during the passage of the storm. The observations of Flossie&#8217;s changing dynamics as it encountered K&#299;lauea&#8217;s vog has implications for the impact on hurricanes of polluted air as they approach the <abbr>U.S.<\/abbr> mainland coast.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The Hawaiian Islands provide a unique environment to study this interaction in relative isolation from other influences,&rdquo; said Businger. He plans to model the interaction of the vog plume and Hurricane Flossie with a more complex model that integrates chemistry into the predictions to better understand the processes at work in this unique confluence.<\/p>\n<p>The research was published in <a href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/2014GL060033\/abstract\"><em>Geophysical Research Letters<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A
