  {"id":26297,"date":"2014-07-23T08:38:10","date_gmt":"2014-07-23T18:38:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=26297"},"modified":"2021-10-28T14:42:48","modified_gmt":"2021-10-29T00:42:48","slug":"mele-program-releases-second-cd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/07\/23\/mele-program-releases-second-cd\/","title":{"rendered":"MELE program releases second CD"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 2<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/mele-cd-2014.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"235\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-26302\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Honolulu Community College&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/mele.honolulu.hawaii.edu\/\">Music and Entertainment Learning Experience Program<\/a> (<abbr>MELE<\/abbr>) released its second compilation entitled <em>Keiki O Ka <span aria-label=\"Aina\">&#699;&#256;ina<\/span><\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>After the successful launch of the MELE program&#8217;s first CD, <em>Island Music: Gifts of Aloha<\/em> in 2013, the program received continued support from Al and Sue Landon to help produce another installment of fine island music.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News story<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/03\/12\/mele-program-produces-first-cd-compilation\/\">&ldquo;MELE program produces first CD compilation&rdquo;<\/a> (May 12, 2013)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&ldquo;While I lived in Honolulu I had the opportunity to support the development of the <abbr>MELE<\/abbr> program at Honolulu Community College,&rdquo; shares Al Landon, former <abbr>CEO<\/abbr> of Bank of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>. &ldquo;As you enjoy this music, think of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s children and the land of aloha.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;With creative input from Al himself, we focused on a theme&#8212;Keiki O Ka <span aria-label=\"Aina\">&#699;&#256;ina<\/span> (&ldquo;children of our land&rdquo;)&#8212;and selected key songs that evoke the topics of growing up in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>, youthfulness, and all around good vibes,&rdquo; says Music Business Instructor <strong>Eric Lagrimas<\/strong>, whose MELE 203 intellectual properties students handled the initial research of record labels\/music publishers and learned about proper licensing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26301\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26301\" style=\"width: 201px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/landons-201x260.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"260\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-26301\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/landons-201x260.jpg 201w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/landons.jpg 269w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26301\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sue and Al Landon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Some of the featured artists on the album include <span aria-label=\"Kealii\">Keali&#699;i<\/span> Reichel, Raiatea Helm, <span aria-label=\"Kaau\">Ka&#699;au<\/span> Crater Boys and Makua Rothman.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Student involvement is key with special projects like this CD,&rdquo; says <strong>John Vierra<\/strong>, <abbr>MELE<\/abbr> program coordinator and audio engineer instructor. &ldquo;Our audio engineering 2 students learned about new concepts such as &lsquo;audio mastering&rsquo; once the final song list is complete. These students are an integral piece to a successful finished product.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>The Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr> <abbr>MELE<\/abbr> program is the only program in the state that offers students an associate of science degree in music business or audio engineering. The goal of the program is to invest in local talent to grow Âé¶¹´«Ã½&#8217;s music industry and broaden its reach to the world.<\/p>\n<p><em>Keiki O Ka <span aria-label=\"Aina\">&#699;&#256;ina<\/span><\/em> is a non-commercial project and serves as an experiential learning opportunity and promotional calling card for the <abbr>MELE<\/abbr> Program and Honolulu <abbr>CC<\/abbr>.
