Burns School of Medicine<\/a> is to nuture and educate physicians of Native Hawaiian ancestry, because their ranks are small compared to the Native Hawaiian population in the state.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26000\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26000\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/uhmed-trio.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"232\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/uhmed-trio.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/uhmed-trio-260x150.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26000\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From left, Akolea Ioane, Kenneth Ortiz and Sara <span aria-label=\"Kuulei\">Ku&#699;ulei<\/span> Miles<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>New Native Hawaiian students graduating from the School of Medicine&#8212;<strong>Akolea Ioane<\/strong>, <strong>Sara <span aria-label=\"Kuulei\">Ku&#699;ulei<\/span> Miles<\/strong> and <strong>Kenneth Ortiz<\/strong>&#8212;were celebrated at a k&#299;hei ceremony, held in June at the medical school&#8217;s Healing Garden, in honor of their journey into medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Like the white coat which physicians wear, the k&#299;hei, a cloth draped across one shoulder, is a symbol of responsibility, virtue, teamwork and dedication.
