  {"id":25806,"date":"2014-07-09T10:19:21","date_gmt":"2014-07-09T20:19:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/?p=25806"},"modified":"2021-10-29T10:47:27","modified_gmt":"2021-10-29T20:47:27","slug":"uh-addresses-language-learning-for-global-workforce","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/07\/09\/uh-addresses-language-learning-for-global-workforce\/","title":{"rendered":"<abbr title=\"University of Hawaii\">UH<\/abbr> addresses language learning for global workforce"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> &lt; 1<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minute<\/span><\/span><p>The University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lll.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Languages, Linguistics and Literature<\/a> Dean <strong>Robert Bley-Vroman<\/strong>, and members of his faculty met with top-ranking officials from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsep.gov\/\">National Security Education Program<\/a>, including its director Michael Nugent, to discuss the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s critical role in language learning for global workforce purposes. The college&#8217;s expertise in this area is extensive.<\/p>\n<p>The college has the unique distinction of having two nationally-designated language flagship programs within the <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.edu\/eall\/\">Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures<\/a>&#8212;one in Korean and the other in Chinese. It also provides leadership for the <a href=\"http:\/\/nflrc.hawaii.edu\/languageroadmap\/\"><span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Language Roadmap Initiative<\/a>, which is an effort to bring together employers and educators to address the growing demand of language skills and cultural expertise in the workforce.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News video<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2013\/09\/17\/uh-leads-initiative-to-build-states-multilingual-workforce\/\">&ldquo;<abbr>UH<\/abbr> leads initiative to build state&#8217;s multilingual workforce&rdquo;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Joining Bley-Vroman and Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures chair <strong>Robert Huey<\/strong> were <strong>Ho-min Sohn<\/strong>, <strong>Dong-Kwan Kong<\/strong>, <strong>Sumi Chang<\/strong> and <strong>Lydia Chung<\/strong> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.edu\/eall\/korean\/\">Korean Languages Flagship Center<\/a> and <strong>Song Jiang<\/strong> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/hawaii.edu\/eall\/chinese\/\">Chinese Language Flagship Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meeting highlights<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chung reported that the Korean Language Flagship Center is experiencing great progress and success in its pre-college language programs at Roosevelt and Moanalua High Schools.<\/li>\n<li>Jiang noted that student recruitment for the new Chinese flagship is exceeding expectations.<\/li>\n<li>Dina Yoshimi, who leads <abbr>UH<\/abbr>&#8217;s involvement in the <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Language Roadmap Initiative, shared news of efforts to build teams from members of government, the private sector and community organizations in order to most effectively train language proficient workforces.
