Drechsel<\/strong> of <a href=\"http:\/\/manoa.hawaii.edu\/undergrad\/is\/\">interdisciplinary studies<\/a> at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa published a new book on pidgin entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/us\/academic\/subjects\/languages-linguistics\/historical-linguistics\/language-contact-early-colonial-pacific-maritime-polynesian-pidgin-pidgin-english\"><em>Language Contact in the Early Colonial Pacific: Maritime Polynesian Pidgin before Pidgin English<\/em><\/a>. The book is part of the Cambridge Approaches to Language Contact, a series of publications that approaches language contact from a range of disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>Drechsel&#8217;s book is a philological and ethnohistorical study of how Europeans interacted with Eastern Polynesians. Drechsel lends historical-sociolinguistic support to an area-wide Polynesian-based pidgin from early colonial times through the mid-nineteenth century in place of a European variety.<\/p>\n<p><em>Language Contact in the Early Colonial Pacific<\/em> redefines the understanding of how Europeans and Americans interacted with Pacific Islanders in eastern Polynesia during early encounters and offers an alternative model of language contact.<\/p>\n<h2>More on Drechsel<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/emanuel-drechsel-drechsel.jpg\" alt=\"Emanuel Drechsel\" width=\"110\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-25639\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Drechsel has regularly taught courses in linguistic anthropology, ethnohistory and other related topics at <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M&#257;noa.<\/p>\n<p>His interest in non-European pidgins also inspired his work behind the well-received case study entitled <em>Mobilian Jargon<\/em> (1997) of greater Louisiana, which focuses on the Muskogean-based American Indian pidgin of the Mississippi valley.
