The University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Mānoa’s National Disaster Preparedness Training Center<\/a> (NDPTC<\/abbr>) will present a one-day pre-convention workshop focusing on hurricane hazards and resilient building design strategies at the 2014 American Institute of Architects (AIA<\/abbr>) National Convention in Chicago, Illinois, on June 25.<\/p>\n

Developed by NDPTC<\/abbr> in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning<\/a>, HURRIPLAN: Resilient Building Design for Coastal Communities will introduce participants to best practices for community planning and non-residential building design in hurricane-prone regions. Utilizing a hands-on approach, the workshop will also incorporate instructor-led discussions and a design exercise using a hurricane-prone school site in New York City.<\/p>\n

The workshop will also cover existing regulations and best practices designed to increase community shelter capacity, while addressing design concerns such as sustainability, accessibility, architectural aesthetics and regional culture.<\/p>\n

HURRIPLAN was developed by NDPTC<\/abbr> and a team of national subject matter experts led by practicing architect Dean Sakamoto<\/a>. Presenting the workshop with Sakamoto will be NDPTC<\/abbr> instructors Illya Azaroff, Michael Lingerfelt and Dennis Hwang.<\/p>\n

“NDPTC<\/abbr>’s partnership with AIA<\/abbr> and other professional associations will build resilience through training, education and research on disaster-risk reduction,” said Karl Kim<\/strong>, executive director of NDPTC<\/abbr>.<\/p>\n
