(Photo by C.Wiener)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> marine science students will return from the last of three student research expeditions aboard <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schmidtocean.org\/\">Schmidt Ocean Institute&#8217;s<\/a> <abbr>R\/V<\/abbr> <em>Falkor<\/em> on Thursday, June 19. The group sailed to <a href=\"http:\/\/aco-ssds.soest.hawaii.edu\/ALOHA\/\">Station ALOHA<\/a>, a long-term ocean sampling site 60 miles north of <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span>. The 11 students on this past cruise makes a total of 58 <abbr>UH<\/abbr> graduate and undergraduate students who have had an opportunity to learn and train onboard the <abbr>R\/V<\/abbr> <em>Falkor<\/em> in 2014.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News story<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/02\/14\/graduate-students-lead-research-effort-aboard-the-rv-falkor\/\">&ldquo;Graduate students lead research effort aboard the <abbr>R\/V<\/abbr> <em>Falkor<\/em>&rdquo;<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.schmidtocean.org\/story\/show\/2250\">Schmidt Ocean Institute student cruises website<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most of this <a href=\"http:\/\/schmidtocean.org\/story\/show\/2689\">third student group&#8217;s research<\/a> at Station ALOHA focused on small crustaceans known as copepods. Student projects included researching the grazing habits of copepod larvae&#8212;a critical component in ocean nutrient cycling&#8212;and exploring the fluorescence in copepods and copepod paternity.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;It was wonderful to watch everyone work together&#8212;the students, postdoctoral students and the Schmidt Ocean Institute team,&rdquo; said Erica Goetze, Schmidt Ocean Institute&#8217;s chief scientist and assistant professor. &ldquo;The data collected on this expedition will serve as a foundation for multiple PhD dissertations and research projects.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p><strong>Brian Taylor<\/strong>, <abbr>UH<\/abbr> M\u0101noa dean of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/\">School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology<\/a>, also joined the research cruise to map the seafloor at the Kaiwi Channel between the islands of <span aria-label=\"Oahu\">O&#699;ahu<\/span> and <span aria-label=\"Molokai>Moloka&#699;i<\/span>. Taylor&#8217;s project gave students an excellent opportunity to observe Schmidt Ocean Institute&#8217;s state-of-the-art high-resolution seafloor mapping sonar systems that were recently used to map 35 percent of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.papahanaumokuakea.gov\/\">Papah&#257;naumoku&#257;kea Marine National Monument<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><abbr>UH<\/abbr> News story<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/2014\/04\/23\/scientists-chart-seafloor-of-one-of-earths-largest-marine-protected-areas\/\">&ldquo;Scientists chart seafloor of one of Earth&#8217;s largest marine protected areas&rdquo;<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.schmidtocean.org\/story\/show\/2216\">Papah&#257;naumoku&#257;kea Marine National Monument mapping expedition website<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Said Taylor, &ldquo;These expeditions have allowed students to walk away with a whole new skill set that they will be able to apply to their own research and future oceanography work.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.schmidtocean.org\/story\/show\/2245\">Student cruise one: The secret lives of whales<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.schmidtocean.org\/story\/show\/2452\">Student cruise two: Deeper views<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.schmidtocean.org\/story\/show\/2689\">Student cruise three: Net gains at Station ALOHA<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Iron-eating bacteria focus of additional <em>Falkor<\/em> cruise<\/h2>\n<p>With the student cruises completed, the <abbr>R\/V<\/abbr> <em>Falkor<\/em> leaves the Port of Honolulu again for the <span aria-label=\"Loihi\">L&#333;&#699;ihi<\/span> Seamount off <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> Island on June 25, on a research cruise led by SOEST Assistant Professor <strong>Brian Glazer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>His research will focus on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.schmidtocean.org\/story\/show\/2225\">iron-eating bacteria<\/a> at this undersea volcano. Glazer and his research team will collect water samples to better understand the processes impacting delivery and dispersion of hydrothermal fluids from <span aria-label=\"Loihi\">L&#333;&#699;ihi<\/span> to the Pacific Ocean.
