Approximately 80 percent of the physicians identified in Honolulu Magazine<\/em><\/a> as Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>’s Best Doctors are alumni, faculty (or both) of the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Mānoa John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (JABSOM). <\/p>\n

Of the 410 Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> physicians on the Best Doctors list, 333 (81 percent) trained at the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> medical school. Almost half of all physicians currently practicing medicine in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> earned their MD or specialty certification at JABSOM or serve on its faculty. <\/p>\n

The annual Best Doctors list is determined by the doctors themselves, through a survey in which physicians are asked, “If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer them?” <\/p>\n

The Boston-based medical consulting company Best Doctors, Inc.<\/a> compiles the annual list of America’s Best Doctors. Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>’s list was published in the June issue of Honolulu Magazine<\/em>. <\/p>\n

“The significance for Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> is that the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> medical school truly is the single most important contributor to the physician workforce in our state and produces extraordinary doctors.” said JABSOM<\/abbr> Dean Jerris Hedges<\/strong>. “We are grateful for the ongoing support by the people of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> for our efforts to provide outstanding patient care and medical education.” <\/p>\n

Local students also out-perform others in the U.S.<\/h2>\n

Ninety percent of the MD<\/abbr> students admitted into JABSOM<\/abbr>’s program are Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> residents, and they consistently out-score their peers in the national licensing exam, United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1, at the end of their second year of training. In fact, JABSOM<\/abbr>’s students have exceeded the national average for the last 10 years in a row.<\/p>\n
