Burn School of Medicine&#8217;s Best Doctors of 2014 with some of the school&#8217;s class of 2014 (photo by Arnold Kameda)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Approximately 80 percent of the physicians identified in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.honolulumagazine.com\/\"><em>Honolulu Magazine<\/em><\/a> as <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s Best Doctors are alumni, faculty (or both) of the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.hawaii.edu\/uhmednow\/\">John A. Burns School of Medicine<\/a> (JABSOM). <\/p>\n<p>Of the 410 <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> physicians on the Best Doctors list, 333 (81 percent) trained at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> medical school. Almost half of all physicians currently practicing medicine in <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> earned their MD or specialty certification at JABSOM or serve on its faculty. <\/p>\n<p>The annual Best Doctors list is determined by the doctors themselves, through a survey in which physicians are asked, &ldquo;If you or a loved one needed a doctor in your specialty, to whom would you refer them?&rdquo; <\/p>\n<p>The Boston-based medical consulting company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bestdoctors.com\/about-best-doctors\"\\>Best Doctors, Inc.<\/a> compiles the annual list of America&#8217;s Best Doctors. <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span>&#8217;s list was published in the June issue of <em>Honolulu Magazine<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The significance for <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> is that the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> medical school truly is the single most important contributor to the physician workforce in our state and produces extraordinary doctors.&rdquo; said <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr> Dean <strong>Jerris Hedges<\/strong>. &ldquo;We are grateful for the ongoing support by the people of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> for our efforts to provide outstanding patient care and medical education.&rdquo; <\/p>\n<h2>Local students also out-perform others in the U.S.<\/h2>\n<p>Ninety percent of the <abbr>MD<\/abbr> students admitted into <abbr>JABSOM<\/abbr>&#8217;s program are <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> residents, and they consistently out-score their peers in the national licensing exam, United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1, at the end of their second year of training.
