A new book defining the intellectual history of this developing field by Emeritus Professor Leslie E. Sponsel, <em>Spiritual Ecology: A Quiet Revolution<\/em> was the winning entry in the science category at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.greenbookfestival.com\/\">2014 Green Book Festival<\/a> in San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p>A work environmentalist Bill McKibben calls &ldquo;wise and careful,&rdquo; the book offers a historical and cross-cultural context for understanding the spiritual ecology revolution. <em>Spiritual Ecology<\/em> focuses on pioneers in the movement and their contributions, while touching upon indigenous, Asian and western religious traditions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25044\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25044\" style=\"width: 110px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/leslie-sponsel.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"110\" height=\"150\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25044\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25044\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leslie Sponsel<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Leslie E. Sponsel is emeritus faculty of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.anthropology.hawaii.edu\/\">Anthropology Department<\/a> at the University of <span aria-label=\"Hawaii\">Âé¶¹´«Ã½<\/span> at M&#257;noa&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/socialsciences.hawaii.edu\/\">College of Social Sciences<\/a>, which he joined in 1981.<\/p>\n<p>The Green Book Festival is an annual competition recognizing books that have made significant contributions to our understanding of, respect for and positive action on the world&#8217;s changing environment. Winning entries are selected by an independent panel of judges based on overall writing style, presentation and potential to enhance understanding of the environment and its issues.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Emeritus Professor of Anthropology Leslie E.
