Ka Manaʻo<\/span><\/em><\/a>, the campus publication of Leeward Community College, took top honors for school newspaper excellence at the Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Publisher Association’s Paʻi<\/span> Awards<\/a> on Thursday, May 15 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. The Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Publishers Association<\/a> is a nonprofit media organization that promotes the print publishing industry in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Co-editor Tyla Smith<\/strong> and creative director Joel Gaspar<\/strong> received the plaque on behalf of the entire staff. The award was one of 32 awards given out to local media outlets and publications for journalism, design, photography and publication. Judging criteria for the school newspaper division included: quality and completeness of editorial coverage; relevance to the school it is serving and design, layout and photography.<\/p>\n

Ka Manaʻo<\/span><\/em> is produced entirely by students with a staff of a little more than 20 serving as writers, photographers, layout designers, illustrators and editors, under the guidance of Adviser Stanley Lee<\/strong>. The magazine is published quarterly, funded by student fees and advertising and administered by the Board of Student Communications. It is Ka Manaʻo<\/span>’s<\/em> first award since the publication’s revival in 2010.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
