Helium gas, contaminated with hydrogen, is expensive and energy-intensive to purify and recover. Capitalizing on expertise at <abbr>HNEI<\/abbr>, Sierra Lobo technologists challenged the team to use proven fuel cell technology to develop an efficient recycling process for helium.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;<abbr>HNEI<\/abbr> optimized proton-exchange-membrane fuel cell technology to electrochemically separate the two gases,&rdquo; explained <strong>Richard Rocheleau<\/strong>, <abbr>HNEI<\/abbr>&rsquo;s director. Separation was achieved by applying electrical energy to the fuel cell, rather than using it to produce energy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24615\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24615\" style=\"width: 143px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/helium-reclamation-system.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"143\" height=\"204\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24615\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24615\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Helium reclamation system (photo courtesy of Sierra Lobo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&ldquo;Fuel cell technology is an excellent choice for separating the helium from hydrogen-helium mixtures,&rdquo; said <strong>Mike Angelo<\/strong>, <abbr>HNEI<\/abbr> project manager. &ldquo;The fuel cell uses a catalytic reaction and membrane transport to remove the hydrogen, allowing for the efficient recovery of very high purity helium.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>In laboratory experiments, <abbr>HNEI<\/abbr> demonstrated that contaminated gas streams with up to 50 percent hydrogen can be refined to produce 99.995 percent pure helium.
