The University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Hilo Performing Arts Center<\/a> hosts the Great Leaps Dance Concert on Saturday, May 3 and the Jazz Orchestra’s Swing Thing concert on Thursday, May 8.<\/p>\n

Great Leaps<\/h2>\n

The UH<\/abbr> Hilo Performing Arts Department<\/a> presents two dance performances on Saturday, May 3 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.<\/p>\n

The show features performers from dance classes at UH<\/abbr> Hilo<\/a> and Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> Community College<\/a>. Great Leap features dance performances ranging from classical, ballet, contemporary, jazz and aerial, choreographed by Annie Bunker<\/strong>, Celeste Staton<\/strong>, Kea Kapahua<\/strong> and special guest choreographer Dori Yamada. The concert also features a senior project presentation by Performing Arts Major Sarah Goo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Swing Thing<\/h2>\n

The UH<\/abbr> Hilo Jazz Orchestra<\/a> presents its spring concert, Swing Thing, on Thursday, May 8, 7:30 p.m. The 25-piece Jazz Orchestra is comprised of UH<\/abbr> Hilo student musicians under the direction of Trever Veilleux<\/b>. <\/p>\n

The concert celebrates the great swing bands of the 1930s as well as those from the swing revival. Classic repertoire such as In the Mood<\/em> by the Glenn Miller Orchestra will be performed alongside more modern pieces like Zoot Suit Riot<\/em> from the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies. The UH<\/abbr> Hilo Jazz Orchestra will be joined by special guest vocalists and dancers performing original choreography by Yamada.<\/p>\n

The concert will also feature the award-winning Honokaʻa<\/span> High School Jazz Band under the direction of Gary Washburn.<\/p>\n
