Larry Suyama and Edith Stoecklein<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

For more than 15 years, Edith Stoecklein<\/strong> taught in the University of Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span> at Mānoa’s English department<\/a>. Her compassion for students was evident and she was sensitive to their stress surrounding paying for school. Before her death in 2009, Stoecklein shared her desire to establish a scholarship fund that would help ease some of the financial burdens of university students.<\/p>\n

Stoecklein’s family honored her memory by establishing the Edith Stoecklein Suyama Endowed Scholarship for students enrolled in the UH<\/abbr> Mānoa College of Languages, Linguistics and Literature<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Edith Stoecklein, a beautiful young German woman, met Larry Suyama, a career Army man born and raised in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>, while Suyama was stationed in Germany. They fell in love and got married.<\/p>\n

Stoecklein, who loved to travel, didn’t hesitate to leave her native Germany when Suyama suggested they live in Â鶹´«Ã½<\/span>. She would soon come to love and appreciate the islands and all they had to offer. Stoecklein returned to school, earning an associate’s degree from UH<\/abbr> community colleges and then bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education.<\/p>\n
